At the 145th National Rifle Association annual meetings and exhibits, you could see and purchase replica flintlock muskets like the kind Daniel Boone used, wardrobe handguns the size of a cellphone, a carriage-mounted 1883 Gatling gun, historic firearms from the Renaissance down through the latest Surge, bullet-splat jewelry, deep-concealment holsters, triple barrel shotguns, and camo everything coolers, flasks, four-wheelers, deer blinds, infant-wear and sexy-time lingerie.
Mingling with a crowd striking for its nearly uniform whiteness, I did lapse into a kind of fugue state from time to time, a retail trance brought on by sheer sensory overload, but with all this American ingenuity and weirdness on display, actual boredom was out of the question. Old people and those less old but morbidly obese trundled about on motorized scooters, their baskets filled to the brim with corporate swag

Oh there we go.
You see, Mr. Limey McSnaggletooth, here in America most shooting murders are done by gang members, who are overwhelmingly non-white and don’t go to NRA shows and meetings.
The NRA isn’t racist, buddy. They accept anybody who pays their dues and recognizes the importance of the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, in its recognition of the God-given right to self-defense from bad men - whether or not those bad men are from the government, from Company X, from the neighborhood, whether or not they are black, white, yellow, red, purple with pink polka dots or multichromatic (or even chromatically-challenged).
It’s the people who only want the authorities to have guns who are - by the very definition - authoritarian. This is a hoot-and-holler away from fascism and a police-state.
So congratulations on being a fascist-wannabe, Mr. Limey McSnaggletooth.
>>>Note to author, most firearms are black so it evens out<<<
Which in their Minds makes you a Slave Owner.
Too bad the author didn’t escape from his fugue state before penning this mindless, judgmental, and stereotypical drivel.
Writes like another eunuch with a yellow stripe up his back. Has a lifetime ban for possession of a "man" card.
The author skews or deliberately misstates statistics to try and portray ALL gun owners in the same light. However, if studies were done on gun owners who believe in God and go to worship services regularly in service to that God, only a minuscule blip would show up on the statistical chart of gun/knife/hatchet, machete/beatings violence attributed to, or linked to, that subgroup. Could the same be said for those who follow islam AND who own/obtain guns or knives/weapons? No. Statistically, what percentage of muslims WHO OWN GUNS living here have been involved in violence compared to the same percentage of faithful Christians who have fallen from grace in that regard? Lumping everyone who owns a gun in the same category with muslims without an understanding of the VALUE system of the users of those weapons is a USELESS statistic. Commission a study to include muslims who attend mosques and Christians who go to church who own guns and see what level of violence you find. In fact, failure to do so very well fits the old adage of there being lies, damned lies and statistics.
An English paper? Why don’t they go kiss their “queen’s” azz
I’m sure Ben labels a gay pride parade as a Parade of Death!
After all, more of those parading queers and their partners will die from AIDS and suicide than people dying from lead from NRA convention goers.
In fact, this isn't much more than a stale recitation of the usual condescension, flavored by a rather uncomfortable riff on Hunter Thompson, popularizer of the phrase "Fear and Loathing". Yes, Thompson was an enthusiastic and somewhat crazy gun owner, commonly preparing for his range excursions with reptilian doses of cocaine and whiskey. One who ended up calling his ex-wife and letting her listen to him committing suicide with his favorite .45. Waste of a fine gun, in my opinion.
This sort of article, typical though it is, becomes quite disturbing looked at from another angle. It is a systematic dehumanization of a class the author clearly hates, because that is, after all, what "fear and loathing" means, and to whom, eventually, nearly anything is justified to be done. Freedom of speech is sacrosanct, but restrictions on it are permissible when they apply to Those People. A Hunter Thompson may own a gun despite the behavior described above because he's One of Us, but Those People are just too crazy to be anything but a danger to themselves and the public around them. Those People need to be controlled. Those People need to be in camps.
Here I am certain I should be subject to the customary accusation of paranoia, and never mind the track record of oppression and genocide that was inflicted on Those People at various points during the last sanguinary century. This time Those People are armed. And we're not going quietly.
In kissing-cousin, faggoty3, hyperventilating while writing for lefty rag ways?
Why, yes.
Hope you scrolled down & read comments at the Guardian site.
Holy mackerel, Andy! the contempt for gun owners not only oozes, it explodes off the page. Trying to guess the nationality (Australian? British?) of all the smug self-satified superior people who hurl the usual insults at us uncivilized Yanks.
“Doctorstrangeglove” is a real doozy, a frothing caricature of a gungrabber. But I notice he repeats the canard of “more & more guns in fewer & fewer hands”, that is, OFWG’s building their massive arsenals. More accurate, “more & more guns in the hands of more & more owners who refuse to answer phone surveys from strangers”.
Of course, no specified agenda from these people on how to push legislation establishing national gun registration in the U.S., mainly ‘cause it ain’t gonna happen.
Hurling offal & insults at gun rights people is the only recourse for the superior people. That’s all.
This guy sounds like Gersh Kuntzman, who got PTSD and arm bruising from firing an AR 15.
Guns save innocent lives about 2000 times per day here in the U.S. The only people that need fear my guns are thugs, whether of the micro or macro variety.
Compounded by the Comments section. I gave up after a dozen or so posts - all kinds of psychobabble. Not even worth throwing in a written reply - they are all in denial or Nirvana.
Unfortunately it isn’t just that putrid rag that spouts forth that kind of drivel in the UK.
You wouldn’t believe how ignorant most British people are of the truth about the crime statistics in the US, and totally terrified like trained monkeys of Firearms.
Every time it comes up in conversation, and it does, it gets hosed down with those inconvenient things called facts. The superior attitude soon takes a good kicking.
Pricks.

“Similarly, the title story describes a writer visiting Haiti who meets an old man, Laurent, who claims he fought with Che. The writer is seduced by the golden age of socialist revolution, but finds himself literally barred from it, standing outside Laurent’s door on a street of old houses with “the slumped, encrusted look of shipwrecks lying at the bottom of the sea”. He and his friend knock “until we made fools of ourselves, but no one ever answered within”.

Ben Fountain - a tad out of his third world element... the ‘golden age of socialist revolution’ LOL - ya gotta be kidding me.

Come back tomorrow night and try it again...
NONE.
What were those?
Did the writer get PTSD?
You got me there. His ability to feed himself and others was generally agreed to be pretty good, but I have no idea what objective standards his contemporaries were using.
My post was an attempt at being facetious about the effective range of a purported replica "musket" vs the longrifle with which Boone is generally associated.
