Poll shows gun ownership in decline
Portland Press Herald ^ | 6/29/16 | Christopher Ingraham

The percent of American households owning guns is at a near-40 year low in the latest CBS News poll released this month.

According to the survey, which was conducted among 1,001 Americans in the aftermath of the Orlando, Florida, nightclub shooting, 36 percent of U.S. adults either own a firearm personally, or live with someone who does. That’s the lowest rate of gun ownership in the CBS poll going back to 1978. It’s down 17 points from the highest recorded rate in 1994, and nearly 10 percentage points from 2012.

In what universe does this poll live?

Wishful thinking. Probably some are smart enough not to disclose they have firearms to some government data base—hiding as a poll.

yeah...÷.. the record breaking annual sales every year since the black swan event tend to make one doubt this poll.

We’ve just become more security concious and better liars to those that ask such questions..

Need to know, yah know.

An absolute lie. Why would gun sales for the last 7 and half years be going through the roof? Why would NRA membership for the last 7 and half years be going through the year. Unbelievable the lies from the liberal media.

22LR has once again disappeared from the stores.

This is a leading indicator of new gun owners, IMHO. People get something to small to train with first, and 22LR ammo becomes as scarce as hen’s teeth.

I was surveyed in that poll - out of professional interest I always respond to surveys.

I did not bother with details - I have no firearms because I’m a charter member of the FR Canoe Club - but I told them I don’t have any guns. I imagine the proportion of conservatives who respond at all has continued to drop and that the percentage who respond truthfully is even lower.

The percent of American households WILLING TO ADMIT owning guns is at a near-40 year low.

Given that every year is a record-breaking year for new firearm purchases, the reality is that gun ownership is at an all-time high, it’s just that gun ownership is a VERY private thing for most people.

Given the anti-gun environment perpetuated by the Obammunists and the concern for theft, one should NEVER tell a stranger (or even most acquaintances for that matter) about gun ownership.

I’m sure it’s true. There’s been a rash of boating accidents.

We tell our daughter that there are two things you never talk about. You never talk about how much money you have and you never ever talk about guns you may or may not have.

Nothing good can come from either conversation.

“What is in decline is poll participants responding truthfully, if at all.”

You hit the nail on the proverbial head.

Very few people are going to respond truthfully to a poll on this issue - few with firearms are unaware of the intense/maniacal desire of the Left to strip us of our right to defense of self, family and liberty, so they don’t want to advertise it. Further, ordinary street criminals (as opposed to the suited ones that we pay too well to pretend to be “public servants”) might get ahold of the information, resulting in your house being robbed (best case) or invaded (rather worse).

Polls are, by and large, garbage. This one, in the face of record after record in NICS checks over the last 7 1/2 years, is the poster child for that idea.

I have serious doubts about this survey.

It tells me that gun control has worked and that we don't need any more laws. In fact, we could obviously afford to get rid of a few of them, say 90% give or take 10%. No need for a BATF anymore so we could cut government spending by shutting it down. It's all very encouraging.

All of these polls and surveys are nuts. It is like Goebbels is resurrected. We had one in the local paper saying CA gas prices are the lowest in 6 years. Total nonsense. They were low 6 or 8 months ago, but now they are back up. Same thing with these sill assessments of the economy being strong and 4% local unemployment; there are more empty retail and commercial sites than ever not to mention the feds own statistic of 94 million permanently unemployed. They lie to us at every turn.

No guns in my house. Nope, no siree not a single one...

If you have a gun safe in the garage, does that count as not being "in the house?"

:^)

If someone called you and asked if you owned guns, would you say yes? Depending on my mood, I’d either tell them to kiss my butt or “Nope, sold all mine!”

It’s just as likely the “pollsters” pulled it out of their waste disposal opening without bothering to poll anyone.

If some pollster called me and asked if we had any firearms I’d say no.

Why help the liberal media create their own database of gun owners that they can then give to the government?

Hell...what’s to say the government isn’t behind the poll?
