I am 1/16 Pawnee (my great grandmother was a Pawnee squaw). I have never claimed tribal affiliation. I have never used “Native American” on any form I have filled out. Have I been an idiot?
My mistake. My grandmother’s grandmother was a Pawnee squaw. If it had been her mother, I would be 1/8 Pawnee.
” I have never used Native American on any form I have filled out. Have I been an idiot?”
I have. I was born in America.
Don’t ask me.
I got my attitude from my step dad’s mom. She was full Cherokee, res born and raised in Oklahoma.
That attitude is:
If you’ve got to hyphenate your identity, you’re neither nor. Pick a team and stick.
Btw, she identified as American, no hyphen. Same with her kids and grandkids (my step dad and step brother among them).
Can you say CASINO MONEY from the white man? LOL!
That whole "native" thing is corrupted English anyway; anyone born her is a NATIVE AMERICAN!
I’m 1/1048 Algonquin (my 10-great grandmother was an Algonquin princess). Can I open a casino?
Short answer: Yes!
Regards,
It’ll damn sure help with grad school or law school or SBA loans etc
I’m 1/16th Creek like in Trail of Tears survivor’s descendant. Could have gotten a small cash settlement in 1973 but never bothered. Have a few souvenirs & paintings I will pass on to the Creek Nation Museum someday.
Have not visited Oklahoma in decades. My cousins’ father was Cherokee so they called themselves “Cherocreeks’.
Cherokee genealogists have traced Lizzie Warren’s ancestry back to the War of 1812. Zero, zip, nada Indian blood. As an Okie City native she played on the old myth that every white in Oklahoma has some Indian ancestry. Not so.
Pure fakery, like Hillary trying to enlist in the Marine Corps.
Yes. Had you claimed to be an Indian it might have got you admission to Harvard with a full scholarship when you were 18.
