I like and respect George Will, and over the years I've been one of his fans. With the rise of Donald Trump, Will has decided to resign from the GOP, along with Mitt Romney and the other folks we might call "decorative conservatives" -- the people who look good on the outside, but who have none of the fire in the belly that marked Teddy Roosevelt or Lincoln -- not to mention the Founders, who were pretty robust and argumentative.
I believe Mr. Will has a genuine distaste for what may become Trump Conservatism. Trump represents a kind of happy warrior style of American politician, similar to Harry Truman and Rough Rider Teddy Roosevelt. It's obviously too low-class for Will, Romney and Jeb Bush, who are all too delicate for the political blood sport that the Left has imposed on our politics. Nothing is too low for the Left. Literally nothing.
The national GOP has been in decline for years, running decrepit candidates like Bob Dole, John McCain, and Mitt Romney -- who actually did flinch in the last debate with Obama, as Trump points out. Candidates like Dole and McCain were picked for their seniority, which is what made them weak and doddering candidates.

What we call conservative today used to be called liberal as in free as in classical liberal ideology of limited govt and maximum freedom in business and personal freedom.
Sometime in the 50s - I am not exactly sure when - liberal was applied to politicians who wanted to spend liberally the people's tax money and conservatives were politicians who did not want to spend (i.e. conserve) money.
Over the decades it took on the meanings we have today. In Europe the parties we would say closely matches the Republicans are still called "Liberal" parties because they adhere to classical liberal ideology.
To confuse the issue even more, the Founding Fathers would be classified as leftists based on the French method of seating for their ancien régime. Those on the right were monarchists/aristocrats and those on the left were commoners who favored civil liberties and wanted a republic. So we conservatives are really liberal leftists if we were accurately using the terms that originated in France.

Being & Becoming (George F. Will’s Sports Machine) SNL skit from the 1990s - nails him.
Most appropriate!
BYE!!!!!
I compared Trump to Harry Truman a year ago. No one listens! LOL.
I’m not throwing money to the RNC (via Trump) until after the RNC convention is over and Trump is the official nominee. Once I’m convinced the GOP isn’t stabbing Trump in the back (like they are now), I’ll open up the piggy bank.
If I get any feedback from the panel or the program's producer, I'll post it.
How ya betting?

We owe Donald Trump a debt of gratitude, and he hasn't even been elected yet. He has weeded out the "neocons/RINO's" in droves, letting them all make complete asses out of themselves. Joining George Will are Jonah Goldberg, Bill Kristol, Kevin Williamson, Charles Krauthammer...and a host of others. Let them All Go Away...Please!!
Classical liberalism ran into trouble when we moved from a local, largely rural and agricultural economy to a more urban and industrial national economy with all its discontents. There was a populist movement and then progressivism got started.
Now that we're moving to a more global, less industrial economy, the conservative/classical liberal synthesis is facing tough times, and what conservatism means is changing.
Will, a Nixon-era conservative was left behind in the post-Reagan movement of conservatism to the right, but now figures like Cruz and Ryan are likewise being left behind.
Americans are undertaxed.
Gay marriage okay.
Atheist.
Vote for Hillary!
“Conservative.”
Right.
I honestly believe the word conservative has lost all relevance.
agree
What a dope..he is.
Done :)
Yep
You can almost see him pulling a lace handkerchief from his lace cuff to whisk away snuff residue from his nose......”
The perfect description of George Will. You nailed that “court fop” to the wall.
Well said.
Will is probably going to miss the “crease in Obama’s pants” as much as David Brooks is going to.
Seriously, would that be all bad? The GOP has been moved to the center/left over the years...probably the best thing that can happen to it is having the few power elitist leave or just get out of the way for the clean up a Trump presidency will bring....the GOPe is pretty dusty.
