Police in Central California say two family dogs killed a 3-day-old baby after her mother left her on the couch and walked away for a few seconds...

The girl’s mother had left the door open because it was hot and she thought the dogs were tied up in the back yard.

The baby died at a hospital shortly after the attack.

the two male dogs, which are believed to be a mix of shar-pei and pit bull are owned by the woman’s brother.

"pit bulls" used to be referred to as "the nanny dog"

80 or so subsequent years of selective breeding to make them mean fighters has a way of changing a breed.

“I was a Shar Pei owner.

No doubts - Sharpeis are great dogs. No one joins a latino sport bike gang and then buys a Sharpei named “Angel” to commemorate it.

Most of these bully braggarts buy Pitbulls, but some buy Rottweilers too. And then some small sliver buys Dobermans still. Arabic braggart bullys get Kangols and European attack dogs.

And they all say the same thing. “It’s not the dog, it’s the breed” and it’s ridiculous. The breed is synonomous with violent criminals.

Stereotypes don’t make themselves. But yeah, Sharpeis are bred to be fighting dogs, and other dogs as well. Bulldogs. Yet we all know that these aren’t the popular choice because they aren’t unhinged monsters.

I carry large caliber because of dogs. I don’t do bounty hunting anymore because of dogs. And it’s always pitbulls that are the issue.

I don’t bounty hunt anymore because they surround themselves with pitbulls, and I dont’ work on people’s computers at home because they all own chiuahahas. And all Chiuahahas are the damned same.

You are both full of it. Pit Bull mix is a gentle dog. It is how the owner treats them. My significant other has had 3 pit bull mix dogs. They are the most friendly dogs I have ever been around.

Just like peaceful muslims are peaceful -- until they just up and kill somebody.

I was cycling the other day and ended up in a cul de sac. A man was mowing his lawn and his rather large boxer charged me. Can happily say you were right and he was harmless. The owner just glanced over his shoulder and kept mowing.

I try to avoid riding through too many closed-in neighborhoods but it’s impossible here. Found a different route to avoid this one tiny monster pooch who gave chase every time I passed it’s house.

i have feeling that the pit bull owning uncle of the THREE DAY OLD BABY had the same attitude as you.

Good luck man, let’s hope that your sweetie pie doesn’t end up destroying your life while maiming or taking anothers...

I’m a dog lover, but I never trust anyone who tells me how gentle and sweet their dogs are, no matter what the breed.

Too many people are irresponsible with their dogs. They do not respect the potential that all dogs have to do harm.

Anyone who insists their pittie wouldn’t hurt a flea is irresponsible. I’ve had big dogs and small dogs, all highly trained and lovingly raised, and I would never be so foolish as to say they were guaranteed harmless.

All pit bulls should be shot and their owners imprisoned.

I think you may have that backwards.

Does anybody here cycle (day or night)? I do, for miles, and would love to know the best plan of defense should I ever encounter one of these sweet, gentle-natured pooches on an accidental warpath.

I've owned two Shar-Pei's, one a mix and one pure.

Like Chows, they are, shall we say, different.

Every pit bull I've ever encountered or known has caused no problems whatsoever.

They are an extremely popular breed nowadays, and that alone, I'm sure, has led to an increase in reported incidents.

That's all I have to say. Let the knee-jerk anti-pit bull hysteria continue...

Pure bred Staffies should not be lumped with pit bulls. Pits are crosses of various “bully” breeds. Way too many of them are carelessly bred for fighting and fierceness. I would not want one but a good Staffie is a wonderful dog. Too many people can’t identify breeds. We had to change home insurance because the stupid agent thought our Black Mouth Cur and uncropped Great Dane were pits.
