Teri Goldstein said her Windows 7 computer had automatically tried to update itself to Windows 10 without her permission.
She said the update had made her machine unstable, leaving her unable to use it to run her business.
Microsoft said it had dropped its appeal to save on legal costs.
Microsoft has been aggressively pushing the latest version of its widely used operating system, which is currently available as a free download for computers running Windows 7 and 8.
However, many people have chosen not to upgrade, because they are running old hardware, have software that does not run on Windows 10, are concerned over the software's tracking features, or simply do not want it.
In February, the company bundled Windows 10 in with its security updates and made it a "recommended update", which meant it was automatically downloaded and installed unless blocked by the user.
Some people accused the company of trying to "trick" customers into installing the update.

somebody pls pass this on
Windows sucks. Every time that they “upgrade” or update, something goes wrong. I’ve moved on to Apple products and I am extremely satisfied.
Yeh I’m going to go with Mac Book/Apple for the next purchase. Flux Micro-managed Soft.
“many people have chosen not to upgrade, because they are running old hardware, have software that does not run on Windows 10”

“concerned over the software’s tracking features”
Yep, dat’s da one right there.
My Windows 7 does the same thing. .. keeps trying to load Windows 10 without my permission. Drives me nuts!!!
I just turned off updated Windows 7. MS is not going force or trick me into Windows 10. I bought a Windows 8 box a couple of years ago and wound up giving it away. Windows 8 sucked!
I keep closing those pop up update to win 10. I run win 7 professional, and most of my other add on programs would NOT run on win 10. And I’m not buying new add on programs that are over $150 each. They work just fine the way it is. I don’t need more crap that shares info with the world and snoops on you.
Computer is set to max blocks and permission updates. Pays to have 2 IT professionals in the family, especially 1 that owns her own business.
We had the thing try to fake us off in the middle of the
night & we had NOT ordered windows 10. What we’ve got ain’t
broke.
Even Win 7 has tracking, every time I look at something on Amazon, the next page I visit has that product. Same goes for any other products you look at. Hubby looked at some car parts, next page had them on it. Not a coincident just them tracking.
And all my FB friends are now in my Samsung Note 3, taking up space on my contact list I don’t want or need. PRIVACY is no longer feasible.
Yeah, that used to tick me off till one of these treads turned me on to--
GWX Control Panel
Worked great for me & the wife [link].

MS needs to be sued over this.
Does anyone have the venue and case number for this?
I allowed win10 into my laptop. The update managed to lose all my data, plus the new “Edge” browser lost all my bookmarks.
The update even wiped the files I had made to store the above info.
And that edge browser is not so good. Clunky, awkward, and non-intuitive. I use Opera now, except on certain sites where it doesn’t flow. It’s a bit quirky, but MILES better than Edge.
Be careful. MS has gotten pretty forceful about trying to ‘upgrade’ your OS. If you ‘x’ out it assumes you have consented. You have to hunt for a link to actually reject the upgrade.
I have never seen such a forceful effort by a software manufacturer to push a program onto people’s computers. I wonder why...
...pretty creepy.
