Great Britain reckons with possible future as Little England

For centuries, this modest little island in the North Sea has punched well above its weight on the international stage: It built a global empire, beat back the Nazi tide and stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States during a decades-long standoff with the Soviets.

But now that Britain has stunned the world with its decision to exit the European Union, experts say it will be focused inward for the foreseeable future.

“I don’t think there will be the capacity or the infrastructure to look outward in the next five years,” said Ian Kearns, director of the London-based European Leadership Network. “With all our diplomatic resources focused on extracting concessions from the E.U., we won’t be in anything other than reactive mode on other issues.”

“little to lose and far far more to gain for the UK to leave.”

They cut themselves off from a €14.3 trillion market in exchange for nothing. Not smart.

Germany and France will now roll out the red carpet for Scotland and Northern Ireland. The UK is done.

Well, many Brits will lose their jobs, will see prices of European goods go up, will lose their ability to travel freely.. but at least they will keep their identity.

The rest of the world is a far bigger market than the small profit EU one, and the EU is the only continental market that isn’t growing.

As part of the EU, Britain was forbidden to enter into any trade agreement with any non EU nation of market. They couldn’t make agreements with India and Australia because Italy objected.

The British economy will outstrip the crumbling remainders the EU. Open trade always outgrows over regulated socialist trade.

Right. Brexit was a revolt against the status quo. The voters were not flipping the bird to the EU. They were flipping the bird to David Cameron. He is gone now. Leaving the EU was just collateral damage.

What has the Enola Gay got to do with the Nazis?

As you know, the RAF dropped plenty of bombs on Germany. The Battle of Britain did indeed halt the seemingly unstoppable Nazi tide, before the war was won thanks to the massive efforts of the United States, the Soviet Union and the ever resilient Empire.

The biggest markets are the EU and the US. They cut themselves off from the EU and it’s unlikely that the US Congress will ratify free trade agreements anytime soon.

But the UK is now free to strike trade deals with individual countries in Africa and Asia. These trade deals will create a much bigger uproar because it involves countries that pay low wages, polute the environment, etc. More Brits will lose jobs.

Trump is not a UK politician. It’s not his job to defend the interests of the British people. I don’t think he ever said that Brexit is in their best interests. He only celebrated the downfall of David Cameron who attacked him last year.

DONALD J. TRUMP STATEMENT REGARDING BRITISH REFERENDUM ON E.U. MEMBERSHIP

The people of the United Kingdom have exercised the sacred right of all free peoples. They have declared their independence from the European Union and have voted to reassert control over their own politics, borders and economy. A Trump Administration pledges to strengthen our ties with a free and independent Britain, deepening our bonds in commerce, culture and mutual defense. The whole world is more peaceful and stable when our two countries – and our two peoples – are united together, as they will be under a Trump Administration.

Come November, the American people will have the chance to re-declare their independence. Americans will have a chance to vote for trade, immigration and foreign policies that put our citizens first. They will have the chance to reject today’s rule by the global elite, and to embrace real change that delivers a government of, by and for the people. I hope America is watching, it will soon be time to believe in America again.

Contrary to the widespread belief outside the country (and even within it) the ‘Great’ in ‘Great Britain’ was never a self-congratulatory indication of status, but simply a geographical expression for the largest island in the British Isles. The state became ‘Great Britain’ when ‘North Britain’ (ie Scotland) joined England in the Unions of 1603 (crown) and 1707 (Parliament). Before this the term was sometimes used to distinguish the large British island from ‘Little Britain (Britanny).

You said: “The UK is done.”

Well, I think the EU is also “done” with the consequences of the “Subversive Invasion”.

I have NO use for the Globalist Elitist Pukes who think they are so smart that they can make a pact with the “devil” and win.

The EU runs a huge trade surplus with the UK. It is in their benefit to continue trade deals with the UK and EU businesses have already said this. Noe if the EU wants to cut their nose off to spite their face, that will be their problem. The UK will do great wiybout the shackles of Brussels. The rest of the EU countries, not so much.

So i am not sure if you are clueless or just trolling. Im guessing both.

Nobody got cut off from anything. As nobody is calling you out on your ludicrous hair-on-fire ignorance, let me be the first.

UK is the largest internal customer in the EU. If the EU puts up tarriffs to stop us buying their stuff, whom exactly do you suppose would suffer?

If german fridges, italian tomatoes (etc) got more expensive, then we would simply go buy from someone else - and a lot of germans and italians (etc) would lose their jobs.

Which is no doubt why Markus Kerber - head of the BDI - has already called for a free trade agreement to be set up with the UK. That was on the 24th.

Make no mistake - Merkel could put us behind a tariff wall. After all she has a glorious history of screwing over her own countrymen. But if that happened we would just buy elsewhere. They can't so easily sell elsewhere.

The German and French stock markets had twice the losses of the British =>

UK -3.15%; France -6.24%; Germany -6.82%.

So you think the UK should leave the EU but should continue to have free trade with EU countries? If that’s the case then I agree. Leaving won’t hurt them at all.

But that of course will never happen. The French and the Germans believe that free trade is only “fair” if the same rules apply to everyone. That’s why they have bureaucrats in Brussels creating the rules.

If I understand you correctly you want the UK to dump the bureaucrats and the rules but keep their access to the EU market. Well, that of course would be the perfect outcome and the UK would prosper at the expense of all the countries following the rules.

But if France and Germany allow this to happen I think you can undetstand that every European country abiding by the EU rules might feel like they are getting cheated and would want to leave.

I’m betting that the UK will be isolated (trade barriers will go up), divided (Scotland and Northern Ireland will choose the EU over the UK. France and Germany will give them whatever they want to make it happen) and will face economic ruin. But this is of course pure speculation on my part. The outcome of the negotiations that will take place now will determine what will happen. Will Boris Johnson represent the UK in the negotiations? I forsee a train wreck but I could be wrong.

Don’t blame Germans, or even Germany. They were even more the victims of the globalists, and are run by them now in the person of Angela Merkel. The EU began as a coal agreement between France and Germany when France was steered away from outright annexing the Saarland, a productive industrial region of Germany, after WWII. Its function included keeping Germany bound to France and the rest of Europe, and down. It wasn’t Germany’s idea, and it is not a fault of theirs that they were hard working and cultivated intelligence and thrift.
