France wants quick British divorce from EU, Germany cautious

France's foreign minister called on Saturday for the European Union to move ahead quickly to seal the terms of a British exit, arguing that the other 27 members needed to give the bloc new purpose or risk populism taking hold.

"Negotiations have to go quickly in the common interest," Jean-Marc Ayrault said on his way to a meeting in Berlin of foreign ministers from the six founding members of the EU - Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Britain voted on Thursday to leave the EU, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and dealing the biggest blow since World War Two to the European project of forging greater unity.

The EU's other members and the British government must now work out the terms for the country's departure and future relationship with the bloc.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told German newspaper Bild that Britain must consider what kind of a relationship it wanted with the EU but it could not pick and choose.

Out is out," Juncker added. "Now the priority is a clean divorce, because citizens and businesses need legal certainty."

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, hosting Saturday's meeting, struck a more cautious note but said it was essential to preserve the "project of freedom and stability" that the six founding EU members had forged.

"It is completely clear that we now have a situation that allows for neither hysteria nor paralysis," Steinmeier said, adding that EU leaders must address the challenges of migration, security and unemployment.

"We must not resort to hectic activity, and act as if all the answers are ready. But after the British decision we mustn't lapse into depression and inactivity," he told reporters.

France WILL follow.. the genie is out of the bottle.”

Hopefully the whole EU will dissolve, but maybe slowly bit by bit so that Merkel shoulders an ever-growing debt to support her hordes of invited guests.

Germany seems to always make poor decisions. They thought it a good choice in the past to rid themselves of hard-working Jewish people and lately consider it a good choice to import millions of low IQ, asset draining savages.

I read it differently. I read it as France (and several others) want Britain to submit the “divorce notice” as soon as possible, but Britain is delaying right now. Every day they delay there are people speculating that British government is going to ignore the referendum results. Once the Brits have sent in the notification it is known that it is a done deal and there are no backsies.

If you read the comments in other brexit threads then about half the people believe referendum is going to be ignored. That is why I believe it is better for all parties if Brits stop delaying and send in the notification ASAP.

After the notification is sent the countdown to 2 year deadline to iron out the details starts.

When the negotiations eventually fail, they can always dig elongated ditches in fields and shoot at each other.

The French never really wanted us to be part of this little club anyway (they've never forgiven us for beating Napoleon) but the Germans realise that their new european empire would be incomplete without us.

The delay is because there may be another, quicker way out.

We may not need to initiate article 50 of the Lisbon treaty.

We can ask the EU to write a new article; one that defines associate membership (on agreed terms) and that moves the UK into that status. This will include such items as reconfirming passport status on financial operations.

Being the EU's largest internal customer gives us the ability to negotiate this sort of thing.

That could mean years of non-clarity all the while conspiracies of Eu not allowing Britain to leave would run wild. Look at these threads - over half of the posters believe that to be the case.

After #BREXIT won there's 5 more EU members planning to leave. I'd read UK sends £350/week to EU as union due? While so called European commission's study to ban high-energy power consuming gadgets ie smartphones, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, air conditioning units, etc.

All of them have separate minds, how can it be possible to come into one as in the EU?

Easy? No. Possible? Of course it's possible These are socialist type countries and share an idealogy. UK's exit vote was close and they could indeed vote in the future to return to the EU. The EU is not dead.

The American libs are all Euro wannabe’s

Massachusetts is the home of the old Loyalists that never got over the American Revolution. The Northeast states all long to be European. Those states have not been really American for a long time now

It would seem that Scotland could just adopt the Euro and ditch the pound with out EU permission. Scotland could just as easily adopt the US$ without permission.

If the vote was mainly about immigration, and the voters’ wishes are truly respected, then why would Britain allow 2 more years of Muslim immigration??

2 years would be the maximum. The deadline would be set after Britain sends article 50 notice. British muslim immigration problem is different from rest of the Europe. Their muslim (and other brown) immigrants are from their former empire and letting them in had nothing to do with the EU.

From here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign-born_population_of_the_United_Kingdom#Countries_of_origin

year 2001 -> 2015
India 467,634 -> 776,603
Poland 60,711 -> 703,050
Pakistan 321,167 -> 540,495
Ireland 533,901 -> 503,288
Germany 266,136 -> 322,220
Bangladesh 154,362 -> 230,143
South Africa 141,405 -> 218,732
Nigeria 88,378 -> 216,268
etc...

EU recent immigrants are mostly from Poland.

Yes, the UK could never join the Common Market until de Gaulle died.

The Germans realize that the UK buys almost as many BMWs as Germany and will still want to trade.

Scotland should leave the UK and do their thing with the EU. This will make the UK Parliament more conservative because the Scottish reps are lefties. Why is Scotland infected with leftism? Who Knows.

Pat Robertson got in trouble for saying that Scotland was “a dark land” overrun by gays (lol)
