I remember the talk (Even though I was very young) about George Bush SR as Reagan’s pick for VP. Carter wasn’t even thinking about the election and people were talking about Reagan in this mindset.

I’ve always been in favor of Congressman Duncan Hunter of California (the son although his Dad would also be a great pick), but here’s another idea:
Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Peter Pace, USMC (retired). A fine, moral leader who deserved another term as Chairman except he was thrown under the bus by the GWB regime for being politically incorrect.
