“What does Scotland have that people want?”
The North Sea oil is the main thing - but it is on the road to collapse, since their last independence referendum. The last time, the oil price was high and proponents argued that they would be net gainers by going independent and taking the oil.
Now it is clear that they will be deeply in deficit if they leave. North Sea oil is unlikely to ever regain its former profitability, due to competition from shale oil. Investment has collapsed, and over 100 fields are set for early shutdown. The rest of the Scottish economy is weak, and the population is highly dependent on payments from Government.
The other major point is the UK Nuke Submarine base in Scotland. The left wants it closed, and the Scots are the most hard left population in the UK.
If Scotland leaves the UK, there will be a permanent structural dominance of the conservative Tory Party in the UK, and Scotland would become more like Greece politically.
Like Greece, an independent Scotland in the EU would have their hands out to Germany and France for a permanent stream of transfer payments. The UK today is one of the big bill payers for the EU.
Dropping the payments that the UK sends to both the EU and Scotland, would be a juicy boost to their budget.
Oil.
