DALLAS — Fire officials say more than 30 people attending a Tony Robbins event in Dallas have been treated for burns after the motivational speaker encouraged them to walk on hot coals.

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans says five people were taken to a hospital Thursday night and that emergency personnel treated the others at the scene for burns to their feet and lower extremities.

The hot coals were spread outside the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center as part of a Robbins seminar called "Unleash the Power Within." The event continues through Sunday.

Representatives for Robbins didn't immediately return messages Friday.

“But then again some numbskull got $800K for spilling a McDonald’s coffee on themselves so anything’s possible in a transformed America.”

That’s actually not the bad case that people think that it is. If you get a chance to read the details I think you’ll be surprised.

It was an elderly woman who was trying to add cream to her coffee. Some spilled on her lap and it was so intensely hot that it resulted in second and third degree burns. She was asking only for McDonald’s to pick up her hospital bill. McDonald’s fought it, and the jury was angered when they learned that there had been other incidents and McDonald’s was aware of the risk and they slapped McDonald’s with huge punitive damages. IIRC the amount was reduced by the judge.

I have some very, very sad news for my fellow freepers.

It has nothing do do with faith in Tony, and nothing to do with the laws of physics.

I attended one of his weekend presentations, at the end we were invited to walk on the red hot coals about 40 feet or so.

I opted to do it knowing full well that I could, keep in mind I’m a former professional firefighter. Long story short I made the walk with no problems, I didn’t even feel the heat on my feet.

It has to do with the mind. Monks do these types of things all the time.

I think the term is they made the choice to do this of their own accord, I doubt they could be successful in a suit.

Voluntarily and unreasonably assumed a known risk

I was thinking of that too after I posted. Still, events like this are gonna make the guy look like a complete fraud. Not that it matters because Tony Robbins already made his fortune.

What pissed me off about that case was that, even though McD's had complaints about hot coffee, hundreds, if not thousands, of people a day bought coffee from this particular restaurant, and none of them were burned or complained.

There were 700 complaints over 11 years time, for all McD's worldwide as of the time of trial for this case.

Hell, my coffee maker makes hotter coffee than theirs did.

Say what you want. But any man that can motivate people to voluntarily walk barefoot through a fire must be pretty motivational.

Skilled sociopaths always are.

It has a lot more to do with the slow conductivity of heat from charcoal. Put a metal grid on top of those coals and those monks will be hopping and their feet will look like hotdogs.

Robins has been burning people for years by making them pay a fortune to listen to his New Age motivational nonsense. Why should this be any different?

Same can be said of the 'Rat party. Motivates more-or-less half the population to vote against their overall best interests way too often.

The coals are supposed to be poor conductors of heat... the ash coating helps with that... but Lurch evidently screwed up...

Every backyard chef knows you have to wait until the coals achieve a coating of ash.

Most people don’t spill 190 degree coffee in their lap. But it’s a risk when selling to people at a drive-thru window.

The 80 yr old woman suffered third degree burns requiring skin grafts. She was disfigured and disabled for more than a year.

Her lawsuit was to recover $20,000 in medical bills, a hardship for an elderly retired woman on a fixed income. McDonald’s countered with an offer of $800.

McDonald’s could have paid her medical bills as charity and earned some good publicity. Instead they fought it and enraged the jury who hit them with over $2 million in punitive damages.

Minor correction: he has NOT been making them pay. They make the choice to pay.

Some choose religion. Some choose a cult. Some choose motivational stuff.

Motivational stuff is big business with a certain faction of the population.
