Why the Orlando Victims were Defenseless
American Thinker ^ | June 18, 2016 | Daniel John Sobieski

In a stunning example of both cluelessness and callousness, President Obama arrived in Orlando to tell the families of the dead and wounded that self-defense was not an option for their loved ones. The Islamist terrorist killer, Omar Mateen had time to methodically search for victims, stream his atrocity on Facebook, and make 16 phone calls. It was time enough, including between reloads, for someone with a Glock to blow his head off.

Yet President Obama wants only predators to have guns. As PJMedia.com reported:

President Obama visited the scene of the Pulse nightclub shooting today in Orlando, declaring that "the notion that the answer to this tragedy would be to make sure that more people in a nightclub are similarly armed to the killer defies common sense."

"Those who defend the easy accessibility of assault weapons should meet these families and explain why that makes sense," Obama said before a backdrop of a makeshift memorial of flowers and balloons. "They should meet with the Newtown families, some of whom Joe saw yesterday, whose children would now be finishing fifth grade, on why it is that we think our liberty requires these repeated tragedies. That's not -- that's not the meaning of liberty."

Actually, it’s the president’s remarks that defy common sense. The Pulse Nightclub in Orlando was essentially a gun-free zone. It is not enough to post a single security guard at a lone entrance. Why weren’t the bouncers armed? Why didn’t the bartenders have weapons available? Generally, alcohol and firearms do not mix, but neither does naiveté and terrorism.

Thanks. I hadn’t read that document before.

Have you seen any funeral homes hosting the victims to send electronic condolences?

Exactly my point. It is a shame that we need armed guards at McDonalds but that is the world we live in now.

Joe Biden is the father of Gun Free Zone Law.

Schools, yes - bars, no. This specific situation results from state law regarding weapons carry for licensed citizens. There is no equivalent in federal law.

Worse than the French and not as well-styled.

“...just like Columbine.”

After a teacher bled out while responders secured a perimeter and made sure there were no more exploding backpacks, the federal protocol for “active shooter” changed.

The new objective was “stop the shooter.” A tactical unit would burst in loudly and head straight for the shooter. In our region, state, county and local officers, and (unarmed) school officials trained together for school situations. This method of law enforcement response is seen on TV procedural shows such as Criminal Minds and Flashpoint.

Orlando’s response needs to be scrutinized. It looks like they pulled out the hostage situation plan rather than “active shooter.”

Unless they were told to Stand down

If they were, then they should blow the whistle publicly. Otherwise they are just as culpable.

I worked at nightclubs for many many years. I must’ve worked for men with some common sense though since there was always a gun and a bat behind the bar and another in the office.

I had a Ft. Worth Policewoman come to my office, and give a talk on How to Deal With an Active Shooter:

1)Run (or Avoid). Leave your valuables, just leave the premises...unless you're in charge of a group of people (like a teacher with children)...then, get THEM to run, no matter where (the police will have people out there to round up even lost 1st graders).

2) Deny- don't just find a closet to hide in or a desk to hide under...find a way to keep the shooter from coming into your room. Throw desks, chairs, door jambs, etc. in front of the door, or disable the opener if the door opens out. Don't let the shooter into your room, and definitely DO NOT PASSIVELY HIDE.

3) Defend. You had hundreds of young men in that nightclub. Even if they were drunk and thinking with the wrong head, they could've banded together and rushed the Muzzie. Use anything- chairs, glasses, fire extinguishers (great for burning out the shooter's eyes, and then you can throw it at him). Better to die on your feet, than die on your knees.

BTW, the Ft. Worth policewoman who gave the talk (BTW, she was a 21 year vet of the police department, and a former Marine), told us that the policy of the Ft. Worth Police is to charge into a shooting situation to take out the perp.

But, Wait! He reloaded several times, made phone calls, went on Facebook.
According to the anti-gun media in the past, the people were supposed to “jump” the shooter in these pauses!

You beat me to it. Anybody who thinks SWAT is going to go door to door confiscating weapons should be feeling pretty safe at this point. 3 hours they let that maniac kill at will.

It’s best not to frequent places that deny one the protections of the Second Amendment - both on moral grounds and as a simple gesture of self-defense.
