They’d be relieved to be in Guatemala rather than Mexico, I’m sure. My guess is, that fence Mexico erected along the border with Guatemala is there to keep Mexicans from fleeing south.

Try Guanajuato, Queretaro, Merida. Much lower murder/crime rates than most major American cities. I go to Mexico every year for a month. Usually different places each year, though I love returning to Zihuatanejo whenever I can.
