Has anybody seen Donald J Trump's tweet today about his planned meeting with the NRA?

Donald J Trump
@realDonaldTrump

I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns.

Flying on a plane is not a constitutionally protected right.

Correct. Which is why it is easy for any bureaucrat to put someone on that list for any reason they want.

Then, if you connect being on that list with the constitutionally protected right of bearing arms, your right to bear arms can be taken away by any bureaucrat who puts you on that list for any reason they want.

“but it makes no sense that the government has decreed that you can’t get on an airplane, but at the same time has no problem with you buying weapons that common felons cannot”

Flying on a commercial airline is not a constitutionally protected right. Owning a firearm is. The government cannot deprive us of constitutionally protected rights without due process BEFORE the deprivation.

Yeah, after the denial you can appeal it. Who has the time and money that could take. I can guarantee it won’t be a quick process.

I tend to agree.

Then I think you're unaware of how arbitrary the no-fly list is. (You should read the tales about trying to get off that list.)

Easiest way to do that is to kick them out of the country.

The problem with the no fly list is that it is a willy nilly bureaucratic determination in the first place and then this determination would immediately have 2nd Amendment implications. It sounds appealing, but the devil is in the details.

Pepple on the no fly list should not be allowed to buy weapons, period.

May your chains rest lightly, and may posterity forget you were our countryman.

Yes, and not everyone on the list is named Mohammed Mohammed Abu Jihad Kaboom Hussein Mohammad. There are some Fred Jones and John Smith-type names on that list.

There’s only a difference if you misunderstand the nature of our rights under the Constitution. Our government is one of limited rights, which means that the Constitution only allows the government to do those things that are enumerated in the Constitution.

The Bill of Rights was added after the original drafting of the Constitution as an added measure to make sure there were no misunderstandings about certain of the more critical topics, but it wasn’t by accident that at the end of the Bill of Rights, they made sure to add, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

So if you think that the only “constitutionally protected rights” that we have as U.S. citizens are those that are specifically enumerated in the Bill of Rights, you’ve already missed the point. We have a constitutionally-protected right to do anything that we want free of federal interference, except where the Constitution specifically provides otherwise.

So, the Constitution does not provide the federal government with the ability to restrict our travel, nor restrict the sale and possession of firearms, except in both cases, in certain limited and clearly defined instances. I’d call both the no-fly list and a no-purchase list “limited and clearly defined instances”.

You can search the list to find out if you’re on it or not. Luckily I am not.

What do FReepers think about this latest development?

The No Fly List has been a disaster. No one knows how people get on it. No one knows how to get off it. Might as well open a phone book and point at names.

And, yet, people want to use it as a basis for shredding the Second Amendment. Shameful.

Trump is not going to come out against guns. He’d lose half his support if he did.

And, on this one, we can say with all honesty, BUSH'S FAULT!

Exactly. This isn’t really a development it’s just an announcement that he’s going to confer with the NRA on firearms policies.

Unless Trump is very careful here, he will destroy his candidacy.

This is Trump acting like a leader rather than Hillary and Obama acting like politicians.

Really? Hillary and Obama have called for this already and now Trump is going to meet with the NRA to talk about the same thing? This is being a leader? Leading from behind maybe?
