In the latest and perhaps decisive battle over the role of women in the military, Congress is embroiled in an increasingly intense debate over whether they should have to register for the draft when they turn 18.
On Tuesday, the Senate approved an expansive military policy bill that would for the first time require young women to register for the draft. The shift, while fiercely opposed by some conservative lawmakers and interest groups, had surprisingly broad support among Republican leaders and women in both parties.
The United States has not used the draft since 1973 during the Vietnam War. But the impact of such a shift, reflecting the evolving role of women in the armed services, would likely be profound.
Under the Senate bill passed on Tuesday, women turning 18 on or after Jan. 1, 2018, would be forced to register for Selective Service, as men must do now. Failure to register could result in the loss of various forms of federal aid, including Pell grants, a penalty that men already face. Because the policy would not apply to women who turned 18 before 2018, it would not affect current aid arrangements.
“The fact is,” said Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona and the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, “every single leader in this country, both men and women, members of the military leadership, believe that it’s fair since we opened up all aspects of the military to women that they would also be registering for Selective Services.”
The Supreme Court ruled in 1981 that women did not have to register for the draft, noting that they should not face the same requirements as men because they did not participate on the front lines of combat.

Extremely large numbers of women in the military became pregnant from casual sex during the past 16 years or so. Many of the more influential members of the bipartisan, socialist political class are wanting the next generation to produce even more bastards than the divorce/cohabitation legal pushes of the ‘90s.

From the text of the passage as written, it’s entirely clear to any literate reader that “they” refers to women who ramble on about how much they want to be liberated.

I just find it obnoxious when people stereotype women or any other group with words like “they.”
“They” do not speak for me, and I never asked them to do so. I take issue with posters assuming that one position represents all women.

Believe me I know. I’m a woman who, as a divorced mom back in the eighties, didn’t get a red cent of child support. I actually worked two jobs and didn’t alienate the children. The rules went draconian in the 90’s virulently misandrist.
Now my current husband has a dem, ex-shrew who works for child protective; possibly the worst mother in the world, ironically, remarried to a six figure guy, yet she milks hubby dry every week. Oh and alienated all three kids in the bargain.

Simple solution: You are automatically registered for the draft when you register to vote. Don’t want to be drafted? Then, don’t vote.
They say they want total equality. But the modern feminist only wants equality when it suits her manipulative purpose. Otherwise she wants special consideration. If she wants to be a cop, she doesn't want to be held to the same physical demands as a man. Ditto fire department.

Absolutely. Put them in the front lines paired only with other women. Women lack the upper body strength to drag out a wounded comrade. Let them see the consequences of their demands. They’re like children. A child wants to touch that hot plate, etc.
You assert that you “didn’t miss it”, and that you therefore realized I was not stereotyping women. Then you go on to admit that, in fact, you did miss it and resented that I was stereotyping women. Or simply chose to ignore it. Or something equally illogical.
The fact that you taught business English is clearly not much of a recommendation, and certainly no guarantee of literacy.
Of course it will be for combat. The idea is that there is no difference between men and women. Also, by 2018, all the gals and guys will be showering together, training together, and bunking together. Won’t that be cozy for innocent 18-year-old girls?
There should be no draft nor registration for the draft anyway. Haven’t we had enough of politicians sending our young people to die for nothing?
And because men and women are not equal in all things, and most women don’t agree with the NOW gang. There are still women who understand that men and women are different, no matter what the idiots in the media say.
