Jenna Johnson, who covers Donald Trump's presidential campaign for The Post, wrote a very important piece Monday that details how the presumptive Republican nominee moves rumor and innuendo into the public consciousness without ever having to directly answer for it.
Trump's strategy comes down to three simple words: "People are saying." As in: "There are a lot of people that think maybe he doesnt want to get it. A lot of people think maybe he doesnt want to know about it. I happen to think that he just doesnt know what hes doing, but there are many people that think maybe he doesnt want to get it."
That was Trump on President Obama Monday, responding to the president's unwillingness to say that the United States is at war with radical Islam in the wake of the Orlando nightclub shootings. Trump isn't saying that Obama is purposely misunderstanding the threat posed by people like the shooter in Orlando over the weekend. He's saying that "people" are saying it. As Johnson notes:
Trump frequently couches his most controversial comments this way, which allows him to share a controversial idea, piece of tabloid gossip or conspiracy theory without technically embracing it. If the comment turns out to be popular, Trump will often drop the distancing qualifier people think or some say. If the opposite happens, Trump can claim that he never said the thing he is accused of saying, equating it to retweeting someone elses thoughts on Twitter.

Trump is a very savvy exploiter of the cracks and the crevices of our modern media environment. In an world in which perception often trumps ahem reality he is a master manipulator of public perception about himself and everyone else. Or at least that's what people say...

I hear all the time on CNN, MSNBC, and other places that “people are saying” this or that about Trump, no names and no proof offered in many of the cases, so it’s just that he’s turning it back on the media, and hitting 0bama with it as well.
Bingo!
Nothing tastes quite so nasty as your own dung thrown back at you, eh WaPo?
The media has hid behind “unnamed sources” or “experts say” or “concerned people express”, etc. for decades and get away with it. Why shouldn’t Trump?

Donald’s just trying to catch up with WaPo and the rest of the enemedia.

I would love to see a President Trump kick the media completely out of the White House and then summon them if he has anything to say, otherwise ignore them completely because you know they can’t just report the news, it has to have a liberal slant, so why even make a pretense of bothering with the turds. Have your spokesperson issue a statement on the internet and ignore the blather of the other wing of the Democrat party, the media.

Talk about the WaPo projecting . . .
yup, he holds a big mirror up to the MSM, then dissects their rancid lies and embarrasses them to death
I tend to agree. Believe it was mentioned a connection with National Enquirer in some way. This is the same ‘dopey’ paper that had the pleasure of bringing down Mr. Edwards’ so eloquently several years ago. Mr. Trump would make a dam fine poker player, wouldn’t he?
D'OH!!
From the lying, thieving, unconstitutional elected criminals like the Clinton an Obama "elected crime families," of course.
Payback's a bitch.
But that's illegal
Really?
Suck it up!
lol...trump is doing the EXACT thing the media does to Republicans all the time. “Mr. Trump...many say that you’re explosive rhetoric proves that you’re a bigot....how do you respond?”
