Students at Yale University are demanding radical changes that would remove white male authors from the English department’s curriculum.

According to a petition submitted to faculty, Yale students are demanding that a course on “Major English Poets” be removed from the curriculum because it lacks diversity.

Idiocy comes to Yale.

Too bad, it used to be a good school - seventy or eighty years ago.

I think they already have a comparative literature major that would give the students what they're looking for.

Maybe their grievance is that creative writing isn't a major of its own but part of the English department, so creative writing students still have to take Major British Poets or whatever they call it and stuff like that, just like people who are actually interested in Britain and its writers.

Or it could all be a plot designed to drive Harold Bloom crazy (Harold probably thinks so).

Yeats comes to mind -
...the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,...
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
.....
Yeah, I can see why the ignorant thugs wouldn't want this sort of thing passed around.....

Demand denied. If the curriculum is unacceptable to them, they can reapply to another college that is more suitable to their personal beliefs.

I was reading a thread the other day, that sidetracked into a short discussion on city people moving to the country and then trying to change things to be more city-like. I think we have that problem with recent immigrants (or children thereof) trying to recreate their country’s values here in America instead of accepting and appreciating America for what it is - a culture based on western European values and identities - and one that fully intends to stay that way.

English majors (especially PHDs) are a dime a dozen. Who cares? Besides, teachers are not the brightest bulb in the batch of college degrees.

“Subjugate the WHITE MAN”; if I were female, or any kind of women's rights advocate type of person, I would be very afraid.
Most of those folks of a swarthy complexion have not demonstrated a sterling record on the equality of women over the last 5000 years.
In Africa they are still considered chattel, men rape 12 year old girls to cure AIDS.
In the Arab world they are not allowed outside the house without a male relative with them; and women can be beaten and or stoned to death on a whim.
In China they still drown girl babies because boys are better than girl babies.
All those lib/confused women out there should give that some thought.

Just shows their hatred for the culture of the country that they live in.

And the stupid people who gave these ingrates a $200,000 free ride at Yale. Imagine biting the hand of someone who could change your life.

Not enough chiaroscuro for my taste in the Madonna painting; the top one looks like something my dogs dragged in out of the fields to chew on.
I had to bury it deep because it stank so bad.

Too bad, it used to be a good school - seventy or eighty years ago.

That's when the person who invented the T Formation, the Statue of Liberty Play, and the Fumble Rookie went there. The batting cage too and a bunch of other things.

He was lucky. He never got to see the crumbling of the empire.

I'll be the first to admit that I find Shakespeare very difficult to understand.

But that is the WHOLE POINT.

He wrote in the 1600s, and people today can analyze just ONE play and get a PhD in it, it's so complex.

You need very smart, educated people to help guide you though and untangle what is clearly the greatest writer in history's work.

No other culture has ever come close to producing a Shakespeare.

They analyzed his vocabulary, and estimated that it must have contained at least 100,000 words.

An average person may know 15,000 words.

You know I don’t think I have ever gave a damn what color the person is that wrote anything that I have ever read.

My main concerns are: do I enjoy it? am I interested in finishing? do I feel like I would rather rip my finger nails off than plod through one more chapter? do I want to read other works by them? and various other things but never skin color.

I basically hate poetry but I would never try to deny access to other people that enjoy it or want to learn more about the poets and their works. Or restricting the people that want to teach the subject.
