PPP: Pennsylvania Close; Sanders Supporter Unity Would Make It Not Close (Trump Tie 2-way, -1 3-way)
Public Policy Polling (PPP) ^ | 6/8/2016 | PPP

Posted on 06/08/2016 12:08:19 PM PDT by NYRepublican72

PPP's new Pennsylvania poll finds a close race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in the state, although both a generic Democratic candidate and Bernie Sanders have more substantial leads that bode well for Clinton's chances if she can get the party unified around her in the weeks ahead.

Clinton has 41% to 40% for Trump, with Gary Johnson at 6% and Jill Stein at 3%. In a head to head match up, Clinton and Trump tie at 44%. Similarly to what we found on the Florida poll we released yesterday, Republicans are more unified around Trump (79/8) than Democrats are around Clinton (75/15). That dynamic is what's making the state competitive.

Democrats lead a generic ballot question for President 45/41, which is pretty similar to Barack Obama's margin of victory in the state in 2012. Bernie Sanders has a substantial advantage over Trump, 45/36, with Johnson at 5% and Stein at 1%. In a head to head contest Sanders leads Trump 51/39.

Yup.

I think it was James Carville who said western PA is like little Alabama.

Unfortunately most people live in the liberal cities and suburbs that habitually go D.

I’d be happy if PA were more like the South. There are places no Republican candidate has won for generations and won’t in my lifetime.

PA polls always gets swamped when the big cities report in. I think the last GOP win there was Bush 41 in 88.

Ok, we get it.

Jesus, that is why you aren’t running for anything. You cede as much territory as possible up front, and then bitch and moan about fraud at the other end.

Yup. Its been a generation since a GOP presidential candidate carried the Keystone State.

Its not a swing state like OH, FL and VA.

If it was, it would be easier to win there.

The only thing you can be sure about in Pennsylvania is that you can never be sure about the politics in Pennsylvania. Lots of useless drones and big government worshipers in Philly, Scranton and Pittsburgh.

Lots of rock-ribbed conservatives in the space between them.

One one hand, we were the only placed which threw out a GOP year in favor of a Democrat in the wave year of 2014. OTOH, his popularity is in the toilet and his promises to tax gas and oil extraction in the hinterlands to benefit his public union employee constituents has gone nowhere.

In Western PA you will find a lot of Republicans in the surrounding counties. They have pretty much been driven out of Allegheny County by property taxes.

The City of Pittsburgh does tend to vote solid “D”. Mainly because most people are still brainwashed by 80 years of union propaganda telling them that “Democrats are for DA WORKIN’ MAN!”

The other factor we forgot to mention is that Hillary is apparently running as the Champion of Gun Control. In this state you may as well tie boat anchors to both ankles.

My point is that the general election campaign has barely started and we are already writing off states? That is not the attitude to have.

The Republicans are truly the stupid party. They automatically spot the Democrats 200 or so electoral votes, putting them in a position where they have to win 270 out of the remaining 338 (80%).

Very little margin for error!

No wonder they lose so many elections.

It irritates me when I hear people saying "don't even compete in these big states - it's a big waste of time."

There are football teams that have a string of horrible seasons only to end up winning Super Bowls because they decide to compete in every game until they find a winning formula.

There are a lot of blue collar Dems and PA has the second highest elderly population behind Florida. It can be in play this year. The fact that PPP has it tied at this stage is encouraging.

Yes, that’s why he lost in his re-election bid.

They got bad attitudes and they seem to like losing. Always a problem around here. They seem to think Trump is like McCain or Romney or Bush. Trump does not like to lose or do I.

For the record, I repeated the title of the press release. I wouldn’t have necessarily come down with that analysis.

Herbert Hoover took PA but little else in 1932.

Sanders supporters are not going to break for Hillary.

See this post: Rosanne Barr endorses Trump

It's clear that many people supported Bernie, because he wasn't Hillary. That anti-Hillary vote won't go for Hillary in Nov.

Yep. The Union bosses will send out all sorts of newsletters, etc. telling them how they should vote. When they get to the booth most will realize electing a candidate that wants to kill the coal industry and shop all manufacturing overseas is bad for their employment, they will vote Trump.

“There are four months left to see which candidate can best make their case to the American people.”

Watching Trump the past month letting Clinton off the hook on issue after issue and rambling on about a Mexican judge, handing the MSM news cycle after news cycle and throwing away all the momentum and more that he had built up; I don’t feel good about his chances in swing states.

He needs to get with the program pretty quickly. Right now he’s acting like an idiot candidate. He’s had a full year to become a more polished candidate. I’m pretty disappointed with Trump the past month; he had the voters right where he needed them and he wasted it all. He can never get the past 4 weeks back.

PA was far more Republican in 1932.
I believe the last time Pittsburgh had a Republican Mayor
was in 1932.
