Snce the fall of 2012, U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel has quietly presided over hundreds of cases from a spacious wood-paneled courtroom on the second floor of the federal courthouse in downtown San Diego, drawing little attention outside the tightknit federal legal community.
Its a building that Curiel is familiar with, from his 13-year-long tenure as a narcotics prosecutor with the U.S. attorneys office in San Diego, eventually rising to chief of the unit.
There, from 1989 to 2002, he built a reputation as a tough, effective lawyer in charge of a special task force charged with dismantling the Arellano-Felix drug cartel an assignment that earned him round-the-clock protection from the U.S. marshals service for a year while under a death threat from the cartel. [...]
Curiel worked as a federal prosecutor in San Diego from 1989 to 2002. For five years, from 1996 on, he was the coordinator of the Arellano-Felix task force, staffed with four other prosecutors and two dozen federal agents. It was during that time that investigators were told by an informant that Benjamin Arellano Felix had approved a hit, or murder contract, on Curiel, according to Vega. For a year, Curiel lived under guard. He was moved from his home to a Navy base in San Diego, then for a time assigned to San Francisco and Washington until the threat abated, Vega said.
Curiel played a major role in a crucial step in the campaign against the Arellanos when he worked to get top cartel lieutenant Arturo Kitty Paez Martinez extradited from Mexico in 2001. It was the first time that a Mexican citizen had been extradited to face charges here a precedent that cleared the way for the continuing extradition of drug figures in the 15 years since.

And he’s part of La Raza and the law firm that he works for went after Trump businesses..gee dont ya love it when the dishonest media reports on everything
battling his buddies
Mole on the inside.
Yeah, and John Glen was an astronaut.
And maybe an anchor baby? Sounds like MSN is trying to mitigate the fallout when the full picture comes out.
“Mexican” Cartel? I thought “Mexican” is a racist word now, they need to change the name of that Country.
That’s nice. Anyone with ties to La Raza is both a racist and a traitor to America.
LA times, little brother of NY Times.
The media always covers up things that make their side not look good..did they even talk about the HORRIBLE job numbers last Friday, of course not..cover up cover up cover up what else is knew
However battling his buddies
really means he was helping to take out his buddies' competition...
The FBI had more than one "helpful" informant that waited for the Feds to take out their drug-dealing competitors, so they could take over an area without getting their hands bloodied.
There will be stories about this judge every single day until election day.
Sure, the guy is a saint. Wow. Who knew.
Trump really hit a nerve with the Mexican Bund.
Trump calling out this judge was a calculated move. The GOPe and some people here are wetting their pants over Trump going after him because of his ethnicity. Now that they’ve started looking into the judge’s background we’re finding out his radical ties. Why else would the LA Times, one of the most pro illegal immigration supporters in the media, come to his rescue? They must be afraid to have his La Raza ties exposed? I think Trump wanted to remind the American people that our federal judiciary is filled with political hacks with definite biases, and not the impartial officials they’re supposed to be.
So the judge battled drug cartels; what’s that got to do with support of La Raza and illegals? Though illegal, they deserve to be free of violence and drugs from the cartels. They don’t deserve all the rights, welfare and special perks they get from the Feds and the California libs in state government.
“really means he was helping to take out his buddies’ competition... “
good point
also, LA Times suggesting that Mexicans belong to cartels...humm...sort of a text book example of racism...institutional at that (sic)
The judge has spent his entire career immersed in race/identity politics. The National Council of The Race and The Race Lawyers Association are racist organizations.
Of course, nobody in the Mexican government has ever battled the drug cartels. What does that have to do with the price of queso?
