N. Korea's missile launch appears to have failed

2016/05/31 09:39

SEOUL, May 31 (Yonhap) -- North Korea launched a missile from its east coast in the early morning of Tuesday, but the launch appears to have failed, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

"North Korea attempted to launch an unidentified missile from the region near Wonsan at around 5:20 a.m., but it is presumed to have been unsuccessful," the JCS said in a brief text message.

The military is studying details of the launch and is maintaining a high level of combat preparedness, the JCS said.

Sources said the launched missile could be a Musudan intermediate-range ballistic missile. Pyongyang fired off three Musudan missiles in April, which all ended in failure.

I got the impression that they are under heavy pressure to make it work fast. Compared with their past test launches, this series of test has been done without enough time between tests, which is needed to fix problems.

Political imperative appears to trump engineering concerns.

The three previous Musudan failures originated in the Wonsan area; very good chance this was a BM-25/Musudan as well. The missile is a North Korean copy of the Russian SS-N-6, a sub-launched ballistic missile. Moscow claims the design was “de-nuclearized” before being sold to Pyongyang, but it could be easily reconfigured to carry a nuclear warhead.

Iran has invested heavily in the program and BM-25 airframes and support hardware was exported to that country several years ago. Tehran is probably pressuring NK to prove the missile works and Kim Jong-un will keep executing missile scientists until they get it right.

I believe that South Korea must deploy THDD and we must increase our troop levels, on the DmZ and deploy more heavy arsenal.

Peace through strength!

My guess is we have invisible assets real close by. What we need is to rescind an EO written by Ford and followed by others regarding the handling of such pest. It prohibits covert ops from neutralizing the leadership.

Once is an aberration.

Twice is a trend.

The third time it’s government policy.

(Unless of course, it’s enemy action....)

Don’t get too excited. How many rockets failed before Von Braun got it right?

Thanks for that context. Mockery is shameful.

Who are we to laugh at their lack of lighting? Do you know how many failures Edison had before he got the light bulb right? Of course that was 140 years ago, and 75 years ago on Von Braun's rocket, but who are we to laugh?
(hint: we are the ones a century ahead...a century!!!)
