Why do Indian-Americans win spelling bee contests?
BBC ^ | 30 May 2016 | Sanjoy Chakravorthy

Posted on 05/30/2016 3:54:06 AM PDT by Cronos

..About 70 of the 285 final round competitors in this year's bee had South Asian names.

Apart from winning the last nine spelling bees in the US, Indian-American children have also won the last five National Geographic Bees ,which tests the geographic knowledge of millions of American children. From 2005, the winning rate of Indian-origin children in these two competitions has been well over 80%.

But what explains this extraordinary success by a group that makes up less than one percent of America's school-age population?

...In academic competitions, especially those focused on math or science, Indian-American youngsters do very well - nowhere near as spectacularly as in the spelling and geography bees, but at five to 20 times the rate of their population size.

These competitions include the Siemens Science Competition, Intel Science Talent Search, Mathcounts, and US Presidential, Rhodes, Truman, Churchill, and Marshall Scholarships.

But in other fields like music and athletics, Indian-Americans either barely hold their own or are non-existent at the top level.

..For example, in the 2013 All-National Honor Ensemble, 45% of the musicians in orchestra and 13% in the band were Asian-Americans, but just 2 and 1%, respectively, were Indian-American.

In athletics and team sports, Indian-Americans actively participate in high school but are virtually absent at college level and in professional sports.

No one of Indian origin (with a very minor Indo-Canadian exception) has ever played in any professional sports league: American football, baseball, basketball, or ice hockey.

There is also no one in the lists of emerging talent, for example, the top 100 high school prospects in baseball.

It's true -- no Americans of Indian origin in sports at all...

Cricket isn't popular here.

“They contribute and ask for no credit or accolades. You will have a better chance of being hit with a meteor than being at a protest of Indian-Americans”

Nonsense. They are terrible students. They cheat, plagiarize, and whine like little kids about doing the work.

Just google for all the riots they create because they weren’t given the answer to the exams in India any more.

“with the added advantage of being fluent in English”

Very few Indians are fluent in English.

First, the parents have to value winning and not simply participation. Next, they have to know what their children need in order to keep them motivated, committed, and actively pursuing their goal. Next, they need to have a plan that is effective in carrying out their wishes to keep their children motivated, committed, and active. This plan has to fit the idiosyncrasies of the particular child and not one plan fits all. Finally, they have to put their plan into action in a way that they can monitor the child’s progress, which means they have to get involved with the child.

“I’ve been told that if you go to any college library on a Friday or Saturday night, most of the faces you see will be from India “

Nope. Indians are notorious for not even showing up for classes. They appear only if there is a grade involved.

Their academic product is very poor.

“many of the Indians that get here are the cream of the crop”

As poor as they are that tells you just how terrible those behind in India must be. I have never met a high quality Indian engineer or student in America. Not a single one and I have met thousands.

You and I are going to have to agree to disagree.

I know too many Indian immigrants to buy this nonsense.

And I am Italian-American. Not Indian-American.

I’ll let you Google all the riots Indian-Americans are responsible for in the US and post them here, Sparky.

In certain communities it's not "cool" to do well in school.
Their leaders should work to change that attitude rather than blaming racism.

Well, sparky, sounds like you are a troll pushing for the H-1B Indians.

The only reason they are here is because they work real cheap. Their education is extremely poor and their work product is terrible.

I’ve followed behind more than one Indian team making loads of money fixing their screw-ups, sparky.

India is such a sewer they are fleeing their country as fast as they can, just like the Mexicans.

In fact, many Indians are now illegal aliens. Most overstay their H-1B visas.

Just like an Indian, too stupid to know what I said. I never said "rioting in the US". So, go back a read my comments and try to comprehend them this time. What a moron. Indian, right?

More Indians speak English than any other language, with the sole exception of Hindi. What’s more, English speakers in India outnumber those in all of western Europe, not counting the United Kingdom. And Indian English-speakers are more than twice the UK’s population.

HAHAHAHAH More Indians speak English than any other language, with the sole exception of Hindi. What’s more, English speakers in India outnumber those in all of western Europe, not counting the United Kingdom. And Indian English-speakers are more than twice the UK’s population.

These facts emerge from recently released census 2001 data on bilingualism and trilingualism in India. Indians’ linguistic prowess stood revealed with as many as 255 million speaking at least two languages and 87.5 million speaking three or more. In other words, about a quarter of the population speaks more than one language.

English was the primary language for barely 2.3 lakh Indians at the time of the census, more than 86 million listed it as their second language and another 39 million as their third language. This puts the number of English speakers in India at the time to more than 125 million.

The only language that had more speakers was Hindi with 551.4 million

If Indians speak English none seem to make it here to the USA or on the customer support lines.

HAHA, the joke is on you.

Their English is always extremely poor.

I’m amazed by how many of the high level spelling bee words are actual foreign words that English has appropriated. I do fairly well at the high end spelling bees from knowing French and German. I may not know the weird technical words, but they take full on German words or French and boom, easy.

Indian children tend to know at least two languages so that is a good start right there.

I already said to you, I am Italian-American, not Indian-American. Evidently, reading comprehension is too difficult for you. Maybe words that begin with the letter “I” are above your pay grade. Perhaps “B” is more your speed.

Moron? Sounds like you need a mirror.

Perhaps you need to go back and read your own post:

“Just like an Indian, too stupid to know what I said. I never said “rioting in the US”. So, go back a read my comments and try to comprehend them this time. What a moron. Indian, right?”

I suggest you foist the white flag, kiddo. This isn’t an argument you are going to win. It’s regrettable that you have suffered workplace and employment setbacks - and this is what it’s all about, isn’t it? - with respect to Indian folks, but the truth of the matter is your beef is with the feckless gov’t employees who have allowed this to happen. Elected and unelected gov’t employees, btw.

While you are discussing Indians as economic competitors, I am describing them as part of our American fabric. And I’d trade every one of the third worlders that Obama is bringing in, one for one, with Indian immigrants, without thnking twice about it. If it weren’t for the cult-like love they had for JFK (who brought the first bunch over), they would all be GOP voters.

I’m going to bed after this post. I work the graveyard shift for a national company. I am not ignoring you, but I need sleep.

All the best...

“with the added advantage of being fluent in English”

Very few Indians are fluent in English.

As a percentage, I suppose it’s a low number, but so is the percentage of the more educated and upwardly mobile (almost all of whom would speak English) compared to the much greater number of impoverished non-English speakers in India.

But in total numbers India is #2 in English speakers (behind the U.S.), followed by Pakistan at #3. Those are the ones who mostly matter when it comes to competing with us, either in Spelling Bees or in anything else.

My Indian doctor explained it to me. He said I look like I have Indian legs, too skinny for high-level competitive sports.

It’s mostly short term memory. These kids study (that is memorize) lists of words for the competitions. It’s primarily about memorization, discipline, and endurance

I don’t have the discipline or endurance, and I think most people don’t.
