Ran out of fuel half lap after crossing start/finish. Dumped by the europeans last year in F1....Incredible race!!

You bet! Been following Rossi’s racing exploits in the
Daily Disappointment (The Grass Valley - Nevada City
Union newspaper) since he was a kid. I can’t wait to see
what Nevada City and Grass Valley will do!

Don’t know squat about F1 racing, but I would think that with modern sensors and availability of all sorts of computing power, one would be able to continuously monitor fuel consumption (and continuously predict it as well) so as to make an end-of-the-race refueling decision with a pretty high degree of reliability (maybe even within an error margin of +/- one-half lap!).

doesn’t matter whether he won by half a lap or 1/100th of a lap- he won..he also led a bunch of laps in the middle of the race and was consistently strong throughout month of May practice and qualifying...

they have the same sensors on Indy cars...with a half lap to go when they realized he would not run out of fuel they told him to go full throttle...

“First place... Last place... at this point, what difference does it make?”

It makes no difference whatsoever because they all get “Parcipitant” trophies! ;-)

He sounded like he had a mild British accent. I wonder if he’s been racing in Britain a lot - sometimes you pick up the accent of people you associate with on a daily basis.

I went to a race like this in Atlanta years ago.

This happened:

We were sitting at the start finish line. One car, minus wheels, body etc. slid and stopped in front of us. We thought the driver was dead. Turns out no one was hurt.

That’s pretty neat - I wonder at what point in the race they start realistically thinking their guy can go all the way without risking that last pit stop. And that’s not to take anything away from Rossi’s driving, which I imagine had to be impeccable in order to put him in a position to win in that fashion.

I’ve never seen so many pit stops so close to the end of a race; usually the “splash and go” stops are done with about 15 laps to go, so you have time to recover. They were making stops with 5-7 laps to go.

It was an amazing, historic win. Congratulations to Rossi, Herta and the Andretti organization. Bravo!

I had hoped to see him in F1, but I’ll bet he wouldn’t trade this win for an F1 seat.

When I saw Mrs. Brady (Florence Henderson) in the background at the winners circle, I thought she might be his Grandmother! It turns out she was the grand marshal for the race. It’s fitting that an American won the 100th Indy 500.

Yah, Rossi jumped ahead a few steps maybe and some
may say luck was key. I say luck is when
preparation meets opportunity.

Over on Autosport.com they’re saying Rossi was lucky, didn’t “merit” the win, blah blah blah. I guess they have butthurt that an American won the Indy 500.

i have a feeling they were going to let him run to the end and hope...i was watching timing and scoring- with three laps to go he had last pitted 33 laps prior and the final 35 were run under green...

she’s a fixture at the race...she has sang God Bless America before the race for years...her voice is ailing and a childrens choir did a great job today...
