A rising NBA rookie was shot to death after breaking into a Dallas apartment he believed belonged to a friend, according to reports.

New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones died from a gunshot wound to his abdomen early Saturday after he “kicked open the front door” to a Dallas apartment and the man sleeping inside woke up and shot him, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The shooter must have been a transplant. No Native Texan would stop at one shot. This one wouldn’t for sure.

He “kicked the bedroom door... around 3:20 a.m.”
What a jerk.

Well aware of the dude when he lived in Central Iowa, playing for Iowa State University, which I am a fan of. He was a very talented basketball player. Also, all sorts of trouble. ISU was his 3rd school.

Thanks to him, he probably blew your NCAA bracket in 2015, when 3 seed ISU fell to UAB. He got all POed at halftime with his head coach, Fred Hoiberg, and threw a chair at him (supposedly). Team got all bunged up after that and lost to UAB.

While living at his apartment, he got into several run ins with his neighbors. Namely playing his music loud at 3AM, and just leaving his garbage in the hallways and not taking it to the apartment dumpster like a normal person. His head coach had to come and negotiate a truce with his neighbors, which was BDJ had to shape up his act, and if so, the police were not going to fine him.

His death comes as no shock. And while a sad event, I don't feel sorry for him. He paid the ultimate price for being a moron, which he was plenty of times before.

I imagine the alternative headline would have been (at least), “Pelican Player Arrested On Domestic Violence Charge”.

“Since when does one kick down the front door of a friends apartment?”

When the friend is female and you are used to not taking “no” for an answer.

I was told that he also kicked open the locked bedroom door.

I’m probably the only one who read the initial headline as some big beaked birds guarding a murdered person at a murder scene. That’s what happens when you reach the age where you just don’t follow this revolving sports team culture anymore.

But it was an interesting story for me until I...learned.

So if he had picked the *correct* apartment, he likely beats the crap out of his ex and we get yet another lecture about privileged athletes and domestic violence. But since he picked the wrong apartment and was (legitimately) shot to death, the NBA and the media are treating him like a hero.

I hate our thug culture. The moral plurality of it is getting harder and harder to stomach.

? I always thought spray and pray was an NYPD thing. Like the 41 shots the cops took when Amadou Diallo reached for his wallet (only 19 actually hit him).

I was taught the deliberate aimed squeeze with a double tap just to be sure. As the single shot killed this guys @$$. One was all that was needed.

Under Texas law, homeowners can use deadly force to defend themselves in their homes.

This is true almost anywhere in the country. NY law permits this kind of shooting if flight is blocked off. Texas Castle doctrine does so much more. Another reporter who just phones it in.

Let’s see if the NBA comes out with a hand wringing protest over gun violence. Could happen at game 7 of the OKC-GS game.
