Senate Votes to End a Textbook Crony Program
The Daily Signal ^ | 5/26/16 | Daren Bakst

On Wednesday, the Senate passed a joint resolution that will effectively put an end to one of the most egregious programs that exists today: the U.S. Department of Agriculture catfish inspection program.

It’s actually disappointing that the vote was as close as it was—55-43.

It may sound a bit silly, admittedly, but this program created in the 2008 farm bill is a classic example of legislators pushing a program for the benefit of a very narrow special interest without regard for the harm to taxpayers, consumers, and other industries.

I know there is HUGE cronyism in the textbook industry; but something is fishy in the headline: this isn’t about textbooks at all.

Is this about textbooks, catfish, textbooks about catfish, or catfish who read textbooks? Any way you slice it, if the feds are involved, it will be SNAFU.

Yes folks, we spent money to send people to Washington to do this kind of crap in the first place. Builds my confidence in our government. NOT!!!

I couldn’t figure out the textbook ref either at first. Figured it out I think, maybe. The title is calling the catfish program “textbook cronyism” or a classic example of cronyism? The author could have worded the title a little better to make it less confusing, I guess.

He should have said textbook example of a crony program.

All of these types of programs work the same, whether it is catfish, peaches, or whatever.

Its designed to promote the consumption of catfish and benefits most producers, but some producers don't benefit, so they always complain about having to kick in their share of the money.

A few years ago this was very important because of the cheap imported catfish from Viet Nam.

Domestic raised catfish ain't cheap, added to the mess of frying fish, potatoes and hush puppies and it makes more sense to go to a catfish restaurant.

I love a mess of fried catfish. It’s hard to find it in the stores anymore, and now I know why.

I hope you know that these fish are raised in sewage filled ponds whether in this country or overseas. Bon appetite!

When we used to trap these fish dad would shoot a rabbit and cover it with a bucket for a week or so and use that for bait. When we fished with a pole we used shad that had been in the sun for a few days.

The trap was illegal by the way.
