More Than 400 Writers Sign Petition Protesting Donald Trump

Donald J. Trump has been working to mend fences with many of his detractors, but among literary luminaries it is looking like it will be a tough sell.

A group of more than 400 writers, including big names such as Stephen King, David Eggers, Amy Tan, Junot Díaz and Cheryl Strayed, released an online petition on Tuesday to express their opposition to Mr. Trump’s candidacy on the grounds that he is appealing to the darkest elements in American society.

“The rise of a political candidate who deliberately appeals to the basest and most violent elements in society, who encourages aggression among his followers, shouts down opponents, intimidates dissenters, and denigrates women and minorities, demands, from each of us, an immediate and forceful response,” they wrote.

If anyone cared what these people thought, they’d still be selling books.

I have never read King. Seen a couple of movies based on his books. The original Carrie and The Shining. Neither movie was bad but didn’t impress me either. Carrie I would rate a 6 and The Shining a 5 out of 10. In the horror genre there have been much better movies.

Over 400 writers, two we have heard of and one who wrote a book about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail as therapy for her bad life, sign a petition. Who are the others? Mostly unknown writers who hope to gain some notoriety from being on the same list as Stephen King for something, anything at all.

Now just a cotton pickin’ minit. Let’s be fair. These are 400 fiction writers, whose job it is to construct an ideal world in which characters act out the fancy of the author, saying what he wants them to say, doing what he wants them to do, unfolding the story that he wants to unfold. They imagine Trump shouting people down and inciting violence, so in their story line that’s what he’s doing. They protest that story line, and respond to it immediately and forcefully, right after they think it up.

Aw. Just because he wrote of an invasion of killer snakes coming out of deer hunters’ asses?

Firestarter is the only Stephen King novel I found worth reading;note that despite the portrayed evils of big government in the story Mr. King loves more big government.

Thanks for the list of writers whose opinions I will no longer have to take seriously. It’s not always immediately clear when I get to reading, and this will save me lots of time. Much obliged.

Stephen King is a little prick. He won’t sign autographs anymore. So we buy his books (not me) and he won’t sign them or pictures, etc. So we don’t buy his books anymore.

I have a dual photo of him and George Romero (”Night of the Living Dead”) that I got George to sign, but King won’t accept them in the mail anymore. A great sign of fan appreciation.

Heck. Romero and Malcolm McDowell not only signed anything at a SciFi Convention a number of years ago, but carried on a rollicking conversation with a small group of us for at least 20 minutes (while we were waiting in line, and then sat with them).

As for the rest of the writers, never heard of most of them, and don’t recall anything significant to me by those I recognize.

Right now on my desks and floor are some things I’m reading, including “V.I. Lenin on Youth”, “Fossils of North America”, Bastiat’s “On Law”, “Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry” (I worked on it and use if for VN research); for the past 10 years, Carlos Castaneda’s “Final Reality”, or is it “Final Conversations” (?), plus a book about American actors and actresses who either served in WW2, Korea and Vietnam, or who entertained our troops during those wars (Martha Raye, Jerry Colonna, Bob Hope, Anne Margaret, Joey Heatherton, and others).

Oh, also have my bible of Rock and Roll, Billboard’s “Top 100 Hits” lists from 1955-2000. Don’t leave home or the FR comments board without it.

To me, these are books that should be read for knowledge and entertainment, and the truth.

"Steven King has been a far left creep as long as I can remember."

And a guy who doesn't give interviews; and the very, very few he has given, he comes across as ... a creep.

So yeah, not a single marketing genius in that group of 400 ...

I average two novels a week and the only writer on this list (I looked at the full 450 petition) I even recognize is King, who I never cared for anyway.

That’s good. It means I won’t need to boycott any of my favorites. I am always amazed when artists, singers, movie stars, and authors go out of their way to irritate over half the population and potential customer base.

Here is a complete list of ‘writers’ to studiously avoid:

Say your dentist or the heart surgeon or defense attorney that you desperately need voted for a candidate you don't like or signed a petition against the candidate you do. Are you going to look for a new dentist or surgeon or lawyer? If somebody is good at what they do -- and some of these writers are -- do you have to have them think the same as you about everything?

Dinty W. Moore – Athens, OH

And do we have to give up beef stew, too?

I can count the number of names I recognize one the fingers of one hand and with two exceptions, King and Tan, never read a word they wrote. And I read an average of five books a week.

Glad I don't have to knock any more authors off my list, I have already started eliminating any author who shoehorns, "the Perfect Gay Couple" into their stories.

Same with Dreamcatcher. Extralegal military task force goes berzerk and starts killing everyone in the zone of an extraterrestrial landing, including the aliens, and a small group of childhood friends with psychic powers saves the day and stops both the psycho federales and the aliens. But King won’t make the missing connection.
