My question is why debate Sanders at all? Can you hear the #NeverTrump’s next chapter: He can’t even win a debate against Sanders.

Of course, but so what? They are just bitter. I think there is lots of upside to Trump, in a debate with Bernie. The #Never Trumpists could argue, if Trump didn't say "yes" when asked by Kimmel, that he (Trump) is chicken to debate Bernie, so how can he possibly hold up in a debate against Hillary?

If the republican nominee, Trump (and he is the nominee now), debates Sanders, he elevates his stature, giving Sanders a boost just before the California primary and probably enable him to win it. That will hurt Hillary Clinton for the general election.
