My question is why debate Sanders at all? Can you hear the #NeverTrump’s next chapter: He can’t even win a debate against Sanders. I guess I’m missing something.

If the republican nominee, Trump (and he is the nominee now), debates Sanders, he elevates his stature, giving Sanders a boost just before the California primary and probably enable him to win it. That will hurt Hillary Clinton for the general election.
