The 70-year tradition of singing the Lord's Prayer during a high school graduation was nearly eliminated by the nation's largest atheist group. The valedictorian chose to deliver it anyway.
Traditionally, the Lord's Prayer was sung by East Liverpool's choir and was considered a significant part of their graduation ceremony.
When the Freedom Foundation for Separation of Church and State claimed East Liverpool school's tradition was a violation, school administrators chose to oblige their wishes, cancelling the song, avoiding a legal battle.
Larry Walton, school board president said the decision not to fight against the atheist group was a basic matter of economics.
"We said, 'Okay, we just won't do it anymore.' It was a decision made because we don't have a lot of money and we'd rather hire teachers than pay lawyers," Walton said. "It's a war we can't win."
However, the graduating class of 2016 wanted to honor the school's tradition. They did not back down.
Class Valedictorian Jonathan Montgomery took the stage and led the class in reciting the Lord's Prayer. The defiant move was met with a standing ovation for the graduates who stood up for their school.
It is reported that Walton is looking to have a nondenominational graduation ceremony in 2017.
And just how is it *Christian anarchy* to exercise our Constitutional rights?
Atheist anarchy is the suppression of all religious thought for no better reason than wanting to kick God out of their own lives, demanding that others live as they do.
Christians are NOT forcing atheists to pray. It is NOT anarchy.
Atheists are forcing any religious people to not pray. THAT is anarchy.
One of the advantages I have as a Messianic Odinist is that I can praise Jesus to p*** off the atheists and socialists, then thank Odin to p*** off the self-righteous Christians. I suspect Trump may be one of us; he looks like a viking got in the henhouse ;)
Resisting in a way that calls upon Satan, is arrogance.
Well you have to choose whom to serve at some point.
Jesus didn’t go making big noises in the streets. His game from start to finish was a game of merit. Once that has played out, THEN He will proceed with being a full imperial ruler. But not before; and the bible has cautionary tales about impatience as to the promise of salvation, including Abraham’s gaffe with Hagar resulting in the people group that is largest represented in modern day Islam.
Don’t worry about “self righteous Christians” here, but consider the plan of God.
Are you and others deliberately mixing things up?
The SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION (gummit pubskewl) was catching your opprobrium. GET WITH IT, IT IS NOT CAESAR’S JOB TO PREACH CHRIST!
Every time Caesar HAS gotten the notion that it is his job to preach Christ, we (1) Whitewashed the state; and (2) Dumbed down the church. Very prominent illustrative case in point: CHATTEL SLAVERY IN AMERICA. YES YES YES that was all wrapped with religious pretense to make it “acceptable.” Now that we know what going down that foolish road does, what mis-witness it is to the grace of God, what obstacle it is to credibility of gospel, why do we want to keep going as though it were the Way and Path of the Savior Himself?
Not only that, but he hires and works with Indian H1-B's ..... all day long.
God will punish him for that, he is destined for the Lake of Fire. No one can be Saved who has hired a foreigner over their own nationality and kind.
I do not object at all to grass roots worship in a school — MAYBE, just MAYBE, this was an act of that (but beware! Jesus hates to be made a token!) Yet we have to realize that the pipers we choose have to be paid. Mixing the two systems produces, at best, an unstable situation, like oil and water, that will eventually separate. The best thing for freedom is to separate school and state.
Ping to wintertime, who can say quite a lot about it.
Well this is certainly a very convenient misuse of the bible.
As well as a very convenient abuse of truth (i.e. insinuation of a lie). I never hired a H1B. However, a H1B hired me, and this H1B puts a lot of Americans to shame. He does American better than half of America does, I reckon. That’s because he brought Old World values to bear instead of profligate libertinism.
As it warns in Lamentations 5:2
“Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, Our houses to aliens.”
YOU ARE MAKING THIS HAPPEN
Ezekiel 11:9
“And I will bring you out of the midst of the city and deliver you into the hands of strangers and execute judgments against you.”
Nehemiah 13:3
“So when they heard the law, they excluded all foreigners from Israel. “
This chap I work for right now is what America ought to wish it was like. He’s friendlier to American ideals at heart than our big cities full of native born aliens like Baltimore.
You know nothing about the context of the various parts of the bible, and are going to keep coming up with nonsense until you do.
OMG! You like foreigners better than Americans!!! YOu have gone completely over to the Dark Side!!!
You and others (not wintertime, which I have pinged) have fallen, I believe, for a trap.
Caesar has said to us “Here are your schools.” In the past Caesar even said “We will worship God in a Christian way in them.”
But Caesar was lying. They never were our schools, they were his schools. When push came to shove, Caesar pleased the people that his own fallen mortal self interest was served to please.
Did not Jesus marvel “I have not seen faith like this in all Israel”?
You hate America.
It is also vital to preserve public expressions of religion, not just by individuals, but by the People in their communities.
I love it enough to praise what is good among it as a good example.
Some kind of friend you are to America. America is of ideals not just people. Even the wave of immigration it has seen, which Donald has promised to stanch, wouldn’t have been an issue except that the the people who came saw America as a land to leech from rather than a land to prosper in and make prosperous in turn. This can’t be allowed to keep up.
It is America’s fault, not my earthly boss’s, that half of it isn’t as wise as he is (and he isn’t even Christian [yet], though he gives Christianity a fair hearing). If they were, America would profit, there would be far fewer persistently idle leeches, and in general more love would reign.
