Ohio Valedictorian Defies Controversy: Leads Class in Lord's Prayer [VIDEO]
CBN News ^ | 5-24-2016

The 70-year tradition of singing the Lord's Prayer during a high school graduation was nearly eliminated by the nation's largest atheist group. The valedictorian chose to deliver it anyway.

Traditionally, the Lord's Prayer was sung by East Liverpool's choir and was considered a significant part of their graduation ceremony.

When the Freedom Foundation for Separation of Church and State claimed East Liverpool school's tradition was a violation, school administrators chose to oblige their wishes, cancelling the song, avoiding a legal battle.

Larry Walton, school board president said the decision not to fight against the atheist group was a basic matter of economics.

"We said, 'Okay, we just won't do it anymore.' It was a decision made because we don't have a lot of money and we'd rather hire teachers than pay lawyers," Walton said. "It's a war we can't win."

However, the graduating class of 2016 wanted to honor the school's tradition. They did not back down.

Class Valedictorian Jonathan Montgomery took the stage and led the class in reciting the Lord's Prayer. The defiant move was met with a standing ovation for the graduates who stood up for their school.

It is reported that Walton is looking to have a nondenominational graduation ceremony in 2017.

There is no Constitutional issue.

The school is not required to have no religious traditions.

The First Amendment prevents Congress from instituting a national religion.

states are free to do as they wish, and that translates down to county, city and boards of education.

But you cannto win against these fascists unless you FIGHT.

Kudos to the valedictorian who had more courage than all of the administrators sitting on their tenured asses on stage.

Why not just ignore the lawsuit, refuse to respond, and refuse to abide by any judgments? Is a judge really going to fine a school district? Let them. Get politicians, Sheriffs and the governor involved to defy it.

When exactly did the Baccalaureate fall by the wayside? I know there were only private Baccalaureates, done by churches, when my child graduated high school around 10 years ago.

See, there are young people who are not snowflakes!

This was a High School.
It's the colleges they go to that perform the lobotomy and they become snowflakes.

Re: “Christian arrogance isn’t any better than anybody else’s arrogance.”

Standing up to atheistic intimidation is not “Christian arrogance” - it is the courage of the Lion of Judah. Christian arrogance would be someone flaunting self-righteous superiority over others because they think their righteousness originates with themselves and not God’s mercy.

You need to take a look in the mirror pal. You have a history in your postings of displaying “Christian Arrogance” that you charge others with. You need to remove the log from your own eye first.

Bravo to this young man!

You know the country is in deep doo doo when a news article makes a big deal out of someone praying.

Pathetic.

I was not talking about the young man. I am talking about the response telling this worker-of-Caesar to fight to do it in the name of Caesar.

To be bold about what the BIBLE says to do is not arrogance. You might cast the log out of YOUR eye first.

This was an alternative finding its own way, not a defiance in the original terms of the observation. ************************************************************* What? The kids were told NOT to do the Lords Prayer. They did the Lords Prayer and you say it is not defiance? de·fi·ance noun:defiance-open resistance; bold disobedience. "the demonstration was held in defiance of official warnings" So what am I missing here? Perhaps you forgot the tag?

You got that right. Hi Tech Redneck directs most of its pious postings to criticize Christians instead of defending them. It’s been its MO since day one.

Standing up to the demands of godless liberals is no *Christian arrogance*.

rusty is correct in post 26 about what *Christian arrogance* is and it’s not what you claim it to be.

Bravo to anyone who does not roll over and play dead to the enemy. If enough people engaged in that kind of civil disobedience, they couldn’t do anything about it. If people refused to pay fines, refused to convict, etc, they can’t put the whole country in jail.

The only reason their threats work is that because of fear people cave and give in to their demands.

Jury nullification worked well with the slave trade. It can work in these cases.

Not being from Ohio, I needed to google to tell whether this was a UK story or not.

I was pleased to find out it was US high school students giving an upraised finger to the USG!
