A nurse who used to work in Saudi Arabia had lots of stories to tell about birth defects - their rate dwarfs the US. It is common there for families to have retarded or handicapped members whom they keep at home, out of sight.

An Afghan friend married to his cousin, had one of four kids born with mis-shapen genitalia, which required multiple surgeries, and another who had maniac behavioral problems as an infant through pre-school.

Cousin marriage raises the chance of birth defect about 4%. After multiple generations of inbreeding, I think the cumulative rise in the chance of abnormalities levels off at around 1/3.
