Mr Hofer led narrowly after Sunday's election but postal votes gave Mr Van der Bellen victory by 50.3% to 49.7%. Mr Van der Bellen campaigned on a pro-EU platform, backed by the Green Party. Mr Hofer, of the Freedom Party, tapped into anti-EU sentiment and fears about rising numbers of asylum seekers. He conceded victory on his Facebook page. Mr Hofer said it was a sad day and that he would have gladly served as president.

The Greens in Europe are now the shariah-law party. Not good for Austria.

What a surprise, the left finds just enough absentee ballots to pull off the win, must have taken lessons from the Chicago machine... However my friends from that part of the world say that the Austrian president is little more than a ceremonial post anyway without any real power and the big test will be next year when parliamentary elections take place

I wonder if vote fraud is a problem in Austria or Europe in general. The EU believers are so hell bent on keeping nations within the EU it wouldn’t surprise me. They always seem to win these elections no matter how close they are.

What you can expect for the next six years....a very marginally accepted government. Frustration will brew over every incident involving an immigrant and every change that the Green Party will try to implement. It really isn’t over....it just goes to the next round.

Can anyone remember a single of the few stories written about this contest where the nationalist, non-socialist candidate was not described as "far right?"

This should have been a tremendous slap at the bureaucrat tyranny in Brussels and might have been a needed boost to the Brexit cause.

Instead, after they kept counting the postal ballots until they got the result they wanted, the close result will not be a message heeded by the EU technocrats. Their soft tyranny will march on, and their jailing of those who question their efforts to dissolve and elect a new musloid electorate.

Tragic for Europe, and Austria.

The Left always seems to be the winner, whenever the voting is close.

Must be union voters protecting their jobs combined with immigrant and Muslim votes.
