As Donald Trump, the eventual GOP presidential nominee, sifts through a handful of potential vice presidential picks, one is rising to the top in Washington and conservative circles: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
"He does all the things that Trump needs," said a Trump advisor.
While in the past it was key for candidates to consider a geographical teaming, with Trump the issue is energizing the Republican voting blocks with a running mate that could also provide savvy counsel once elected.
Insiders said that Gingrich's assets are his close ties to conservatives and the pro-life movement and his years as a lawmaker who as speaker was able to cut deals with then President Bill Clinton on Republican issues like welfare reform and balancing the budget. They also note his strong relationship with marriage activists, though critics will likely pounce on his two divorces.
He has also run for president, in 2012. He won Georgia, his home state, and South Carolina in the primaries and was twice the front runner in the polls. He proved an able debater, also.

Gingrich HAS been vetted... And the ex wife who had cancer? She died 20 years later of something else... so that dram queen issue is off the table.
We can fight back against the liars at the New York Times... and MSM. So if they start the same old crap - we’ll ANSWER BACK.
It’s a new world.
I would be happy with either Newt or Sessions.
My thinking is that if Trump was to get elected, then his heavy lifting would need to take place during the first 4 years. If he doesn't do it then the prospect for reelection goes out the window. Therefore he could use the talents of Newt from day one when he is most vulnerable.
If the first term is successful and Newt is 77/78, Trump can thank Newt for his service to the country and chose a younger running mate ( this would need to be agreed upon ahead of time) who would have 4 years to get on the job training for his/her own ticket yet not have the public tired of him/her from being around for 8 years already and looking at the prospect of another 8 years for a total of 16..........
Newt as VP? No Way.
That picture on the couch with Pelosi will be wallpapered across the country.
Chief of Staff? Yep.
Insider with the knowledge of how the Washington Machine works.
Needs a younger, constitution minded, nuts & bolts type for VP that will have some appeal to younger voters.
A “Paul Ryan” type, but someone who loves America instead of being a shower-boy for the lobbyists.
A “Sarah Palin” type, but someone with DC knowledge who can help push legislation through.
A “Jeff Sessions” type, but 25 years younger.
Yeah, maybe they can pull some liberal voters over as well, by having another photo taken of Gingrich and Pelosi on a couch, touting how they work together.
I have no problem with him serving as Trump's advisor. No way in hell should he be Trump's running mate, though. Trump would lose a lot of credibility as an "outsider" if he picked a career Beltway hack like Newt Gingrich as his running mate.
ever think of an older VP with experience etc this go round and should Trump run again, pick a younger VP then?
Right now it’s about stopping the destruction of the country - so maybe we can get to 8 yrs down the road.
This is 2016, one of them can self identify as a black female. The CommiecRAT's would have to respect that.
That’s why he should be Trump’s Chief of Staff, not VP.
I don't understand why people automatically assume that VPs are the natural person to replace the president. Most VPs who eventually become president stink at the job and never come close to their predecessors achievements. (i.e. Bush I)
Trump wants a V.P. that will work for a living.
Since he isn’t a D.C. Insider he intends to have his V.P. out there pushing his Agenda. He wants someone who knows how the game is played and can get things pushed through Congress.
Yup. And the lemmings around here chanting, "Newt for VP," can't think past 5 o'clock happy hour.
Change your member name. If Trump and Gingrich both went two full terms, Newt would be almost 90. Duh.
And Newt has all but said on Hannity the VP position wouldn’t be the best way for Newt to serve.
I totally agree except for the VP job. Newt can tutor and mentor Trump more effectively as Chief of Staff. Typically those two spend more time together than they do with their family. Trump is a smart guy, but needs a lot of help getting his objectives met. Further, a younger VP could also learn from Trump’s business acumen and pragmatism, and also how Gingrich works the politicians getting bills passed. Tons of opportunities for a guy like Duncan Hunter Jr., or some other bright patriotic folks.
What kind of work? Can he be something like a “Speaker of the Senate”?
And he's a perfect VP choice for Trump.
I concur...Newt for Chief of Staff
I’m for Newt, Jeff, Jim or Mike but really like Newt
No Pat, like him but no
