As Donald Trump, the eventual GOP presidential nominee, sifts through a handful of potential vice presidential picks, one is rising to the top in Washington and conservative circles: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
"He does all the things that Trump needs," said a Trump advisor.
While in the past it was key for candidates to consider a geographical teaming, with Trump the issue is energizing the Republican voting blocks with a running mate that could also provide savvy counsel once elected.
Insiders said that Gingrich's assets are his close ties to conservatives and the pro-life movement and his years as a lawmaker who as speaker was able to cut deals with then President Bill Clinton on Republican issues like welfare reform and balancing the budget. They also note his strong relationship with marriage activists, though critics will likely pounce on his two divorces.
He has also run for president, in 2012. He won Georgia, his home state, and South Carolina in the primaries and was twice the front runner in the polls. He proved an able debater, also.

I can live with that
But trump didn’t. Plus if you have listened to or read him in the last decade meet has changed his view
I like that too
Rand Paul....
I Agree. On another note, we need to support Norbert Hofer in Austria. He is their Trump. Get the word out.
I don’t trust Trump, but I think Gingrich brings someone that I think would temper Trump’s lack of experience in government.
“Yes, it works. Plus, Christie at Justice, Palin to head RNC, Carson as Surgeon General, Rubio for LGBT outreach, Huckabee for a cabinet post, etc. No room for Cruz. None anywhere. Wouldnt trust him as mailroom clerk if that was available as a political appointment. Maybe make him ambassador to Haiti or some other h@#* hole.”
Palin heading the RNC. Can you imagine all the splodey heads over that one? Lol
Newt is one of the most gifted speakers I’ve ever heard. He will be a valuable resource to The Donald, but not VP. His time has passed. It’s like Bush picking Cheney. Gingrich cannot accept the torch. Trump will be a dead end president. He needs a firebrand.
I’m still looking for an answer how the role of VP can be maximized beyond Senate tie breaker and state funeral attendee.
What power can an effective VP wield?
How old is Sessions?
Same as Trump. I’m hoping its neither Sessions or Gingrich. We need someone younger.
Ann Coulter mentioned some names for VP
- GOV. PAT MCCRORY
“Newt will be 73 this year. “
I would normally agree with you, in that we need the VP to be an heir apparent to Trump. But consider this:
Unless you win the war, your victory plans are for naught.
2016: pick VP to help win election
2020: pick VP who will be the young, heir apparent to Trump in 2024
By waiting till 2020 to put a younger guy as VP, we’ll have a better idea of who is really with us and who is a trojan horse.
George HW Bush was a trojan horse. He immediately started undoing all of Reagan’s work.
My bet on the 2020 VP for this scenario would be Rand Paul. He has drifted some since in the senate, but his instincts are generally in the right direction. Four years in the senate to prove he’s really on board, and 4 years tutoring under Trump would make him a formidable candidate in 2024.
Yes, that will be a problem.
But we have to win the election first. We need a VP that can deliver a battleground state, or bolster a key region, or enhance a demographic.
Newt might be a fine VP if they win. But Newt does NOTHING to help win the election, and WE MUST WIN. In fact he probably hurts the ticket.
The same goes for Hunter, Sessions, Cruz, and DeMint. They might be fine VP’s IF elected, but they don’t help win the election, and they probably hurt election chances.
McCrory is an intriguing option.
Trump can do a lot better than Newt, not that there’s anything wrong with him.
I’d be OK with that.
But I think he’d make a better chief of staff running day to day ops
Eliminate surgeon general. We cannot aford the luxury.
4 years of Newt then Brownback. 16 years. Brownback for 10. Trump quits half way in his 2nd term on the condition the congress stays gop.
