Costly virtual border fence in tatters
Los Angeles Times ^ | October 22, 2010 | Brian Bennett

Reporting from Washington — The Department of Homeland Security, positioning itself to cut its losses on a so-called invisible fence along the U.S.- Mexico border, has decided not to exercise a one-year option for Boeing to continue work on the troubled multibillion-dollar project involving high-tech cameras, radar and vibration sensors.

You need to apprehend them and deport them.

Ding, Ding Ding. All the technology in the world won't help if your policy is catch and release.

It never did work right, never held up to the climate. Vast temperature changes with so often extreme heat, with high winds blowing dust and even small gravel into the parts took its toll, many were not operational when installed. The parts of it that were in remote locations it was a nightmare in logistics to get them serviced. Techs driving so far to diagnose problems and then often not having parts so needing to come back. Long stretches where each trip was overtime because 4-5 hours of drive time one way. They had the same issues with the blimps along the border, they were down more than operational mostly due to wind.

There has been a sensor system in place for many years that is pretty effective- the downside to it is critter movements can trigger a false alarm. The other down side is even if a sensor is tripped by humans there is not always personnel close enough to respond and people get away. That is really not part of the virtual fence people talk about though- those sensors have been in place forever it seems at least 35 years that I know of.

Silly as it sounds the most effective thing in rugged parts of the border is the Border Patrol Horse Patrol. If they can get reliable intel and support they can go places vehicles cannot, they are quiet enough to surprise most smugglers which makes them far better than ATVs. They can do joint operations with helicopters and other BP and are pretty effective in our area. There is just not enough of them and politicians keep them off the actual border in most cases so bad guys nearly always have an advantage of being able to travel far into the U.S. before being in an area to be detained.

There are probably some experienced tunnel rats around who could give the BP some pointers about finding those tunnels and tunnel exits in the US.

Put up double fence and patrol it 24/7. Make Mexico pay.

I agree, it needs to be double barriers and a patrol road to really be effective.

“How do you protect against deep tunnels under the Trump Wall?

You listen for them being dug or used. Locate them and destroy them.

One thing that has to go along with any effective plan is we have to up the ante on crossers. It needs to be a very serious offense to cross the border illegally. If it was a serious crime and treated that way instead of a misdemeanor that is seldom prosecuted that would cut down considerably on those trying to cross. Resources could be aimed at the remaining die hards.

We have to remove jobs and all prizes on this side, deport illegals, strictly enforce all of our laws. The border would be much easier to secure.

It all has to be a package deal, none of this piecemeal hit and miss political mess we have had for so long.

People say the border cannot be secure and illegals cannot be deported. That is not true but the will has to be there.

It was a program that was a detection system, not a fence or wall. It was like an AWACs on the border. Boeing sold it as such. Boeing did not claim a “virtual fence.”
The detection system was to replace the smaller and less capable MSS system.
Apparently I was the only Boeing employee with a son in the Border Patrol. Boeing would trot me out at all the DC parties and such. I would never defend Boeing, didn’t like them at all, but would defend the Border Patrol and the program. The Agents in the field wanted this detection system as it helped give advance warning of where they were coming from (it could look deep into meh-he-co) and the Agents could then ambush them when they crossed the border.
It was the DHS Director Nappypants that cancelled the program. It was actually starting to make a difference and the technology was maturing and she couldn’t let THAT happen.

Ground-based sensors - we have them, not in the cities where they are worthless, but in the desert where they work wonderfully.

Pretty accurate but see Post 48.
And the Horse Patrol Units are really good but there are few of them. My son was part of a HPU and even shot a drug smuggler that tried to kill him. The smugglers tried to run over him and his horse and my son shot the driver while my son was on horseback, at night, at a gallop against a moving target, using his side-arm. John Wayne shooting for sure.

Interesting. Thanks for your input.

I still think instead of abandoning it, they should have improved it. There are both wartime and border applications of such technology if you can get it to work.

If homeland security said it was needed to keep Bible thumping, gun toting Texan veternas in Texas, Obama would have it working tomorrow.

i. First, build the wall.

2. Second, install high-quality sensors seeking and
processing sounds and other “signals” from the earth to
let us locate the tunnels,

3. Third, use high speed drills to drill down to the
tunnels and

4. Fourth, drop high-impact explosives down the
drill holes into the tunnels and then detonate them -
thereby causing massive “cave-ins”.

5. No tunnels. No “coyotes”. No tears.

Yes the politicians named it the virtual fence because then they could claim more miles of fence.

In our area it never worked. I am sure it would be wonderful if it did.

This looks more like a wall. But this one's only 25 feet tall. I say higher.

How do you protect against deep tunnels under the Trump Wall?

Same way you protect against ladders and such. You treat all such incursions as invasion attempts, and give patrolling Army units full discretion to shoot to kill.

No fence will work, unless there are serious enforced consequences for attempting to breach it. And not much of a fence is needed, if people thinking of crossing see the potential consequences as unacceptable.

Consult with Israel and follow their advice, of course.

Thinly veiled anti wall propaganda? _______________________________________________

I've noticed that on plenty of other threads lately. Many of these posters I recognize as rabid Cruzers. There's on this thread I read by IFinnegan (spl?)...

There needs to be a more thorough purging of Cruzers because they are still using FR as their platform for Globalist, open border, total amnesty propaganda. I've also noticed that each day they get bolder defying the clear words of JR.

I think they feel like they've compromised FR to the extent that it is one of THEIRS, like all the other "conservative" media (NR, CR, Beck and Levin radio programs, etc.) The vermin must go so we won't be complicit with their anti-sovereignty, anti American treason.
