Hmmmm, wasn’t there something that happened in the air a year or so ago in Egypt airspace that caused an airliner to disappear from radar, and crash ?

If you hear hoof-beats, don’t assume it is zebras.

Yup, but that flight was over land in an area that is known to contain AA batteries of types that *can* bring down such aircraft. It seemed to have been a bomb anyway, though - or such seems to be the multiply official conclusion.

This flight was 170 miles out to sea over the Med, at 37,000 feet. It was nowhere near land and nowhere near where any ground AA could have done anything to or about it. If it wasn’t a bomb/terrorism or mechanical failure, it would have required a major surface combatant (I.e., warship) to track, lock on and launch a missile the size of a telephone pole to bring the airliner down. Last I checked, the terrorists don’t yet have any of those.
