The courage to go after sacred cows is one of Donald Trump's more appealing, if controversial, traits. He raised the issue of NATO, contending the USA pays far too much of the freight in the mutual defense pact.
Such proposals, the candidate has made clear, are not so much policies as "suggestions" or what one might call, from his business perspective, negotiating positions.
Regarding the NATO suggestion, frankly, I am of two minds. While it's clearly arguable the American contribution is excessive, the investment might be necessary for the preservation of the alliance (weak as it is) and to maintain the necessary U.S. leadership position. "Leading from behind" has been one of the obvious fiascoes of the 21st century.
But I have another, somewhat similar, suggestion for Donald about which I have no ambivalence. It's time for the U.S. seriously to curtail, if not end, its mammoth annual contribution to the United Nations that dwarfs those made by all the other 192 member-states

He has to begin clearing out the traitors at the State Department.
NATO is more immediately dangerous than the UN, IMHO
OUT of the UN
and
DONE with agenda 21!!
NYers generally hate the UN in a personal way, not necessarily in a political way, sadly. I would be so happy if we pulled out and got rid of the scum who inhabit that gorgeous building and give it over to some good American company. Come on, Trump, I know you hate the UN - do something about it. It could be a new Trump Tower!
Not only defund it, but send it packing to a new host country. That would get a lot of spies out of our country.
Trump no doubt will look and the UN and seeing how Trump thinks, goodbye UN. And I agree with one of the posters that the UN building would make one hell of a great hotel.
Trump for President.
I have lived in Europe on and off for a total of 35 years. I used to be in favor of dumping NATO. Now I don’t anymore. While I still believe that they are a paper tiger, if we should ever be attacked, they have to help us. Granted, their military (except Turkey, France and the UK) would just be in the way, even 100 soldiers and 1 plane would be better than nothing. NATO gives us a buffer zone where we could station soldiers and material to be used.
The only thing I would do (as Trump strongly suggests ) is to demand that the countries commit their pledged support of 4% of GDP rather than their present level of 2% with us paying the difference.
Oh, I forgot Poland.
We should stay in the UN but cut the big paycheck—We can not afford to fund this monster. Send them packing to Geneva like the Old league of Nations. The Gravy train is OVER! The UN has lost its reason for existing—Now its a haven for Tryants to vent at the inequalities of the west and ask for more money so they can live better in Europe. Dump the big paycheck! Move the UN out of New York.
What in the world is that abomination?
That’s on display at the UN in NY.
