Urban population growth and demand for food could spark global unrest, study shows

population explosion in urban centers around the world is expected to fuel an unprecedented demand for food that – if not met – could trigger economic upheaval and civil unrest on a global scale, according to a study published by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

“Growing Food for Growing Cities” forecasts that two-thirds of the world’s population, 6.3 billion people, will be squeezed into the cities by 2050 and that global food production would have to increase 50% to 60% to keep everyone fed. The world’s urban population now stands at 3.9 billion, according to the United Nations.

“The threat is, will there be enough food produced for those people living in cities?” said Dan Glickman, a former U.S. secretary of Agriculture and co-chair of the council’s advisory group on the study. “Will the supply chains to get the food to the urban areas be adequate to feed the people, and if not, will there be political and economic dislocation? It’s a very, very serious problem and not enough people have been talking about it.”

In order to meet an increased demand in growing cities, the system by which food is produced, processed and delivered will need to change, the report says. And that transformation must target the food supply network in low- and middle-income countries, especially those in Asia, Africa and Latin America where feeding urban populations has become an urgent and critical challenge, according to the study.

More Regulations and higher taxes will solve the problem.

I disagree.

This situation calls for the upgrade all Obama cell phones to the most current models with an extra 5 GB of monthly data.

There are also murderers who need to be released from prison because there are too many blacks in jail.

Educated people in prosperous nations plan and limit their families to what they know they can afford.
Long before "the pill".
Such societies will not run out of food.

Then they get overrun by people who have no such restrictions. And our own governments are complicit.

yes, you are right on....back in the Soviet times, one needed special permission to move from the Russian country side to a city....

All part of the UN and Agenda 21....wherein, cities were not allowed extra land mass, and had to stop urban sprawl, whereby increasing population density....

That is one benefit of urbanization - the birth rate almost immediately drops to replacement level because you don’t have the space for more kids AND better access to family planning.

We need to implement a worldwide Obama program to provide free ESPN and beer. Many guys would rather watch sports and drink than screw. If the birthrate doesn’t drop sharply, give ‘em more beer.

Are the people who did this “study” saying that people in cities are unable to grow/raise crops and chickens, etc for their own food? That is a bit insulting-they had better learn, or they might starve if the grid goes down, or some other catastrophe... “

The libtards in the US cities contribute to lack of food. They want to ban use of pesticides, they push for non GMO, they shut down oil and gas that provide cheap trucking of food.

The libtards in the US think that food comes off the supermarket shelves, with no thought to how it might be grown or transported into their cities.

And they push this foolishness all over the world by eliminating cheap food and cheap transport. They call it Green or sustainable.
