Yep, and then the vast majority of our elected leaders were more concerned about patriotism than personal gain, not near as much now.

Those you mention have an important thing in common: no college education. Taxi driver in former Communist country is an expert hacker? Makes sense to me. Brains plus good education in sciences and maths plus slow economy = taxi driver with lots of time to lurk about. Heck, maybe he's an agent of a foreign government? What do we really know?
