Europe's top law enforcement officials maintain that the 500 euro banknote (worth about $576) makes it easy for criminals to launder money since it's so easy to move around undetected.
In a report last year, Europol said cash was still the "instrument of choice" for terrorists and 500 euro notes were in high demand, though they're not popular for everyday transactions.

20s worked for me for a while. Now it won’t quite buy me a fill up. But one of the local stations is 5 to 7 cents a gallon cheaper for cash than credit, so I usually just go in and give them a 20 and wait for the pump to shut itself off.
Yes, all they really want is a paper trail to track. Try to avoid leaving a trail, and they will come after you. Leave a trail, and have a legitimate explanation, and that will probably be the end of it.
The strangest thing is that the EU wanted this to replace the US $100 on the international scene. Maybe it was working as intended too well?
I didn’t mean a wash, as in the washing machine...I meant that there does not appear to be any advantage of the dollar over the Euro for convenience, with the big bills gone.

Governments are looking for ways to kill off paper, so they can track yer loot, tax it and take it, without sending a SWAT team.
It will come, eventually. That’s for certain.
But if you report the 10K plus on their silly form when bringing it in, you can bring cash in and out of the country at will.
Don’t confuse people with facts. People still think the government is going to take over your IRA’s and 401k’s.
