At the starting gate: Clinton leads Trump by double-digits (CNN/ORC Poll)

As Donald Trump captures the mantle of presumptive Republican nominee, a new poll finds he begins his general election campaign well behind Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

The new CNN/ORC Poll, completed ahead of Trump's victory last night, found Clinton leads 54% to 41%, a 13-point edge over the New York businessman, her largest lead since last July.

Clinton is also more trusted than Trump on many issues voters rank as critically important, with one big exception. By a 50% to 45% margin, voters say Trump would do a better job handling the economy than Clinton would.

Almost 9 out of 10 voters in the poll called the economy extremely or very important to their vote for president, outranking any other issue tested in the poll.

Clinton has the edge on a range of other issues. She is more trusted than Trump on terrorism (50% Clinton to 45% Trump), immigration (51% to 44%), health care (55% to 39%), the income gap (54% to 37%), foreign policy (61% to 36%), education (61% to 34%) and climate change (63% to 30%).

Overall, voters are evenly split on their opinion of Clinton -- 49% see her favorably and the same share unfavorably. But a decidedly larger group (56%) see Trump unfavorably than see him favorably (41%).

Trump's path to the GOP nomination became clearer after his win in the Indiana Republican primary Tuesday led to his primary rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, to drop out of the race. While Clinton lost Indiana to her primary rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, the former secretary of state has a broad lead among delegates.

Trump and Clinton would be the most disliked major party nominees in CNN's polling dating back to 1992, with only two other candidates meriting less than 50% favorability heading into the election

RE: Are these the same pollsters that had Cruz tied with Trump yesterday?

No. CNN actually showed that most GOPers in Indiana wanted Cruz to drop out of the race before the Indiana primaries.

Hillary is more trusted on immigration?!?! Does that make sense? Very possibly something is wrong with this poll!

Hitlery’s true level of support is about 35%.

This can be clearly seen in polls that pit her against Kasich, where Kasich beats her easily.

It’s quite obvious that 15+ points of the support she gets in polls is reluctant at best and is looking for an excuse to vote against her.

Trump need only between now and election assure these voters that he is not the racist madman that will get us all killed while throwing Mexican babies over a wall, that the media has made him out to be.

She’s old. I refer to her as Satan’s sister, not daughter.

I remember back in the 90’s there was a FReeper dressed up to look like Satan with a sign that said “Bill Clinton married my sister!” during a FReep of the White House. Doctor Raul?

Biggest laugh I ever had!

Agreed.

Those who think this will be a cakewalk for Trump are very wrong about that.

He definitely has a chance to win, but the demographics in this country are such that he will only do so by a very small margin if at all.

Ya know, I was getting so sick of hearing how everyone else could beat Hillary!, except Trump. Now, Trump has beaten everyone else.

I just heard some talking heads looking through the numbers from Indiana. Hillary! lost every category, even women! She is a weak candidate; and, I think she will be beaten. The only way she wins is by the Democrat way --- cheating. We need to be vigilant about that. Hopefully, Trump won't fold like a cheap suit, and will go forward with recounts and actual investigations of cheating claims.

I’ll call BS on this - terrorism and immigration favor Hillary? No way.

BS “climate change”???

Need to see the details of how the questions were worded as well.

This is typical CNN/ORC/LSM BS.

Mr. Trump could be running unopposed and these lying POS's would come out with a poll showing him down by double digits.

Think I'll wait on hitting the panic button and crack open another beer!

Trump will easily beat Clinton.
Trump commercials will point out the dead and wounded Americans she left behind and all the other traitorous and other criminal acts she is involved in.
