At the starting gate: Clinton leads Trump by double-digits (CNN/ORC Poll)

As Donald Trump captures the mantle of presumptive Republican nominee, a new poll finds he begins his general election campaign well behind Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

The new CNN/ORC Poll, completed ahead of Trump's victory last night, found Clinton leads 54% to 41%, a 13-point edge over the New York businessman, her largest lead since last July.

Clinton is also more trusted than Trump on many issues voters rank as critically important, with one big exception. By a 50% to 45% margin, voters say Trump would do a better job handling the economy than Clinton would.

Almost 9 out of 10 voters in the poll called the economy extremely or very important to their vote for president, outranking any other issue tested in the poll.

Clinton has the edge on a range of other issues. She is more trusted than Trump on terrorism (50% Clinton to 45% Trump), immigration (51% to 44%), health care (55% to 39%), the income gap (54% to 37%), foreign policy (61% to 36%), education (61% to 34%) and climate change (63% to 30%).

Overall, voters are evenly split on their opinion of Clinton -- 49% see her favorably and the same share unfavorably. But a decidedly larger group (56%) see Trump unfavorably than see him favorably (41%).

Trump's path to the GOP nomination became clearer after his win in the Indiana Republican primary Tuesday led to his primary rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, to drop out of the race. While Clinton lost Indiana to her primary rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, the former secretary of state has a broad lead among delegates.

Trump and Clinton would be the most disliked major party nominees in CNN's polling dating back to 1992, with only two other candidates meriting less than 50% favorability heading into the election

The real race has yet to begin.

Let us see where her numbers are once Trump turns his direction to her.

I am still thinking the Democrats are going to let Hillary take the heat and then pull a switch at the last moment. They have done this sort of thing in the past.

When a pollster calls a Hillary supporter, that supporter will talk all day about how great Hillary is. But when a pollster calls a Trump supporter, that supporter will not pick up because he is out weeding the garden or changing the oil on his car.

And if the Trump supporter does pick up, he'll just as quickly hang up. Trump supporters are ornery folks.

In the first debate, if Cankles even agrees to debates, she coughs herself to death.

But not before taking a disgusting bathroom break.

Yes because nationally Hillary is likely to beat Trump by 10+ points /sarc She’s the next Reagan I tell ya, popular as a dollar Big Mac. I say this with the upmost confidence, the wind is at Trumps back, he will pound on her mercilessly in the general and win in November. Maybe not a rout but by enough to leave no doubt.

And the poll was of registered voters, not likely voters, which helps skew toward Democrats.

I’ll start looking more at the one on one polls after Labor Day.

Does anyone REALLY think Donald will let let himself be beaten by Hillary after coming so far?

Donald is brilliant and tireless, and he knows ALL the dirt on the criminal Hillary. Not being PC crippled and spineless as the rest of the politicians, he will hit her with ALL of it.

He will SLAUGHTER her.

This is Completely unbelievable.
Hillary is not seen as a likable charismatic figure, and fosters little respect in most people’s mind (many women and liberals alike).
Leftist powers that be will use electronic voter machine tabulation fraud to push their hideous NWO candidate down our throats.

Clinton and Obama want to bring in millions more to be dependent desperate democrats... It’s not charity - or compassion - liberal elites are buying votes with OUR money.

One more reason to send ALL the illegals home.

Well, those same people would be on the Trump wagon, since his voters and Bernie’s appear to be one and the same.

sorry, but that’s a really stupid statement...slackers can expect no goodies from a Trump administration...

but she at least appears sane.

you’ve listened to that harridan’s rasping, hectoring voice when she gets animated, and ‘sanity’ is the term that popped into your head...?

It is easy to understand Hillary’s unfavorability, but would someone please define what the Trump unfavorables are....mindful that Trump is a private citizen.

They suddenly switched from “likely voters” to “adults” with some registered voters thrown in. No agenda there.

Look at the topics being polled ..

terrorism
immigration
health care
the income gap
foreign policy
education
climate change

That is a list made for Democrat polling ...

immigration (51% to 44%) . . .

Show me any credible poll where 51% of voters favor open borders over enforcement. Even African-Americans, the most solidly Democrat demographic out there, do not favor open borders.
