With Donald Trump in Charge, Republicans Have a Day of Reckoning
NYT ^ | May 4, 2016 | Michael Barbaro

Now that Donald J. Trump is the presumptive presidential nominee, a parade of prominent Republican leaders is breaking with the traditions and rituals of party unity and offering him a blunt message:

Nope. Never. I can’t. I won’t.

In a flurry of social media posts and interviews over the last 24 hours, these Republicans raced to distance themselves from Mr. Trump, delivering a remarkable rebuke to him at precisely the moment when parties usually coalesce around a candidacy.

Mark Salter, a longtime strategist for Senator John McCain of Arizona, sounded resigned and disgusted as he said the unthinkable: He was now prepared to back Hillary Clinton.

“The GOP is going to nominate for President a guy who reads the National Enquirer and thinks it’s on the level,” he wrote on Twitter late Tuesday. “I’m with her.”

The dissenters, who range from wizened elders to younger strategists and even elected officials, are loudly and publicly proclaiming their unwillingness to support Mr. Trump.

Many have expressed reservations about him in the past, but left open the possibility they might back him in the future. Now they are forcefully foreclosing that option.

I'm just waiting (and expecting since I'm convinced it will happen) for those who have 'bolted' to basically concede the GOP to Trump (because he has wrested control of it) but then walk across the street, not necessarily to the Hildebeast but to where somebody is starting a third party with a draft Romney (or suchlike) idea. They would rather do that, be a spoiler and lose than see Trump as the President.

You know these #NeverTrump people have disrupted the lives of the middle class people for years. It is about time they have their lives disrupted. I have no sympathy for them.

The entire process has been discouraging to watch. It's going to be difficult to bury the hatchets. Trump is a high risk candidate. One can only hope he will surprise conservatives.

One thing for sure, I'm not voting for Hillary.

You underestimate folks - some of us who HAVE done a LOT of genuine searching - and reading.

Trump values are nothing like “Conservative” values - and most definitely are not Constitutional values.

The man is totally Constitutionally illiterate - and he doesn’t care. He actually said he has never felt a need to even READ the Constitution.

Outrageous is that so many folks have completely ignored Trump’s history, and even recent statements that fly in the face of Conservatism.

Of course those agonizing over the Trump victory need to stop and reconsider. Donald Trump is an instinctive Conservative, who can be expected to move further to the Right, once he is elected--rather than betray us, as has been the case with those who feigned Conservatism, purely to be elected.

For analysis of why we can trust Trump, see Trump: Metaphor For American Conservatism.

And they need to consider also, the enormous gain to the Conservative position, already provided by Donald Trump's dramatic overthrow of the "politically correct" mindset that was stifling dissent in America.

“Trump will face off against Hillary and get creamed, getting no more than 10% of the popular vote.”

LOL! That is one dumbass statement right there.

Are the “disenfranchised” voters who are now coming out of the woodwork to register enough to counter those bailing out? Could be interesting.

Voter turnout has been low for years, often with the majority staying home. What if that were to change this time around?

(I heard one interesting reason for refusing to register to vote — to stay off the Jury Selection list. Hmmm.)

Well it looks like the FR is still loaded with TDSers. The race is over. All of you “real conservatives” who have brought our country to this state are welcome to opus on over to DU where you belong.

The rest of us have Hilary to defeat.

Because a Democrat Progressive serial liar running as a “Republican” is far superior to a GOPe candidate....

I didn't think of Ted Cruz as a "Democrat Progressive", myself.

Why do you think that about Cruz?
