Immigrants are supposed to be beneficial to the U.S. — so much so that federal law requires them to prove they won’t end up on the public dole if they are legally admitted.
But it’s a stricture honored more in the breach than in compliance, according to statistics obtained by the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which found that of the millions of legal immigrants living in the U.S. and collecting welfare or other public benefits, only a single person was kicked out of the country over the last three years for becoming a public burden.
That seems to fly in the face of federal policies that, dating back to the very first broad immigration law in the 1880s, have demanded that immigrants prove they will be able to support themselves.
New immigrants can be denied if they can’t show their financial means, and those already in the country can be deported if they fail to live up to the bargain — but that hardly ever happens, according to FAIR’s data.
The group had asked the Executive Office for Immigration Review, which hears the cases, for data on five countries: Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Cuba and Colombia. EOIR said it found just three cases brought between 2013 and 2015, all of them against Mexicans, and only one of those charges was sustained.
EOIR said it didn’t have data for all nationalities.
No enforcement means more impoverished immigrants willing to test their chances, said Ian Smith, the FAIR investigator who obtained the data.

This makes me sick. My grandparents emigrated to the US after WWI. They had to have someone vouch that they would be responsible for them financially. My maternal grandparents were proud that during the Depression, they never stood in a bread line. Sometimes all they had to eat for dinner was beet greens, but they survived. I was raised that it was shameful to have to go on public assistance. When my brother got laid off in the 1970s, he took a job driving truck until he found another job. How things have changed...

When I got my Wife her green card many years ago, I had to Personally Guarantee she would not be a Public Burden, and that MY ASSETS would be Confiscated to PAY THAT BURDEN for 7 years.!!

Glad to see this is being reported. However, the pop-up ads on the Washington Times website is EXTREMELY annoying and makes me want to never go there.

The men may work at a “real” job using someone else’s
SS number but their “wives” who have a different last name collect the welfare, Medicaid and food stamps. 20 years ago the Mexican government gave them comic books showing them how to take advantage of our stupidity.
This is why I have advocated paying them 5K each to leave. That would be 20K for a family of four, which is about the average family income for a year in Mexico. But they must get fingerprinted and supply DNA so they don’t come back in. We would save billions and billions of dollars and they could use the money to help build up their own country. And maybe I could call a company and not have to PUSH 1 for English.
It would probably save us billions, but it would cost the DNC millions of potential voters. But we can’t have that, dontcha know? Without the permanent underclass and the people that are perpetual recipients of government handouts, the DNC would never win another national election.
Got to keep the voter rolls stocked with guaranteed votes.
We don’t have to deport anybody. Cut off the welfare and the opportunity to work and the vast majority will leave on their own.
I understand that, as in Europe, their extra wives each get a welfare check. Someone please tell me that is baloney.
