Half-ton pickup trucks crowd the curb outside the One Horse Saloon, a neon Coors Light sign in the window and rib-eye steaks on the menu, but otherwise Nickerson, Nebraska, is nearly silent on a spring evening, with only rumbling freight trains interrupting bird songs.
Regional economic development officials thought it was the perfect spot for a chicken processing plant that would liven up the 400-person town with 1,100 jobs, more than it had ever seen. When plans leaked out, though, there was no celebration, only furious opposition that culminated in residents packing the fire hall to complain the roads couldn't handle the truck traffic, the stench from the plant would be unbearable and immigrants and out-of-towners would flood the area, overwhelming schools and changing the town's character.

1100 jobs for illegals and they know it
Yep, here's the kicker. This town is just 40 miles northwest of Omaha and Omaha is full of gibsmedats and illegals.
This plant = Somali pirates working there
Any word on the town’s financial situation?
” ..... the perfect spot for a chicken processing plant .... 1,100 jobs ... “
Clearly, it would mean 1,100 Mexicans. It would ruin their town to take such a plant.
400 people in the town. 1100 proposed jobs. Did they think the townspeople couldn’t do the math?
Some things are more important than money.
I don’t blame them one bit.
They don’t want the Somalis. Nor do the Kenyans.
BINGO — You nailed it. The processing plant would result in a massive inflow of illegals!
I would never trust any company that wants to put a facility that employs 1,100 people in a town with only 400 residents. The labor economics alone make this a very questionable decision.
Tell me about it.
You have to love it.
Somalis and messicans would over-run the town. then come the somali gangs and the messican gangs fighting for control.
My hat is off to these people for wanting to maintain the status quo.
Let me guess, in addition to bringing in the illegals, the company would probably want the town to pay for all sorts of infrastructure to accommodate for the new plant and that certainly would be no guarantee against the company pulling up stakes and shutting down the whole thing in five or ten years?
I’m waiting for the media to call them a bunch of racists.
Beck & Cruz will be there to welcome the illegals with gift baskets and soccer balls.
There’s been a bad tendency of processors to build a packing plant in a town with the promise of jobs, then bring in illegal aliens to fill them for less than the locals would work for.
They are not wrong for doing this.
zactly...there will be mescins all over that town.
