Sadiq Khan, a Muslim lawmaker from Britain's opposition Labour Party, is the strong favourite to win London's mayoral election on Thursday after a bitter contest marked by religious tensions and accusations of racism.
Polls show Khan, the son of a bus driver, is as much as 20 percentage points ahead of rival Conservative Zac Goldsmith in the race to run one of the world's top financial centres. If he wins, he will succeed current Conservative mayor Boris Johnson to become the first Muslim to head a major western capital.
London's population of 8.6 million is among the most cosmopolitan in the world and it is rare for identity politics to enter British campaigning.

Rotterdam has had a Muslim mayor (Ahmed Aboutaleb) since 2009. Calgary, one of the most conservative-leaning major cities in the world, has had a Muslim mayor (Naheed Nenshi) since 2010.

Said this before, but if I were British I would back Britain First, then UKIP. They’ve gotten beaten up by the media & I don’t think these groups are “racist” (that’s a nuclear word). BBC can hardly control their PC rage when describing Britain First. Jayda Fransen is a brave young woman, she and Stacey Dooley.
By the way, some numbers: 2.7 million Muslims in UK, mostly in England, and 1.8 million in USA. And America has no Chunnel.

London is part of the UK and a major part. But ‘London is Britain’ is just nonsense. NY or LA or Miami are part of the US but they are not ‘the US’. Nor is Paris the complete epitome of France. Such a statement as you made is just silly and a Brit wouldn’t make it. In fact, quite the opposite. Whats NOT in the cities makes a country.

Too many ‘Yanks’ have a romantic, crusader view of Britain First, the EDL or even the BNP.
The UK, as you well know, remains 96% NON Muslim and over 90% white British/Irish/European/other. Of course I am concerned about Islam and the UK, but as Brits we know that a lot of what I read here or from the US is just far too OTT. Britain isn’t a Muslim nation and it wont be one. Those 96/92 figures are after nearly 70 years of ethnic immigration on a large scale. Muslims aren’t even the biggest ethnic group. Also the vast majority of UK Muslims aren’t radicals or terrorists, just normal people of faith.
Radical Islam may make a lot of noise in the UK, and too many cowards fail to challenge it, or have done so too late. But for all the hype and noise, they haven’t and are not about to take over the UK. If Americans would spend some time here, I think they would be shocked that the apocalyptic UK they keep hearing about is much the same one they have grown up with, and that the UK hasn’t been taken over by a foreign religion or culture, and that the country remains a white country run by white people.
Sadiq Khan winning the mayoral election in truth is a minor political story and certainly not any portent/proof of the UK being a Muslim state. Any more than Harvey Milk winning made you all gay. I am more concerned that he is Labour and they will hold power for a few years.
