It could be related to the fact that (1) Ted and Heidi lived in different states for about five consecutive years, and/or (2) they do no hands-on parenting, but leave that up to hired help.

When his daughter tried to put a cheese head hat on his head, he was quick to lash out, looked angry, and did not handle it properly.
He pretty much brushed her off like a red headed step child.
Any father involved in his small children’s lives would have just taken the hat and smiled at her and said, Daddy doesn’t need the hat, you can wear it.
And put it on her head.
