[George Will]:If Trump is nominated, the GOP must keep him out of the White House
Washington Compost ^ | 29 April 2016 | George Will

Donald Trump’s damage to the Republican Party, although already extensive, has barely begun. Republican quislings will multiply, slinking into support of the most anti-conservative presidential aspirant in their party’s history. These collaborationists will render themselves ineligible to participate in the party’s reconstruction.

Ted Cruz’s announcement of his preferred running mate has enhanced the nomination process by giving voters pertinent information. They already know the only important thing about Trump’s choice: His running mate will be unqualified for high office because he or she will think Trump is qualified.

Hillary Clinton’s optimal running mate might be Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, a pro-labor populist whose selection would be balm for the bruised feelings of Bernie Sanders’s legions. Running mates rarely matter as electoral factors: In 2000, Al Gore got 43.2 percent of the North Carolina vote. In 2004, John Kerry, trying to improve upon Gore’s total there, ran with North Carolina Sen. John Edwards but received 43.6 percent. If, however, Brown were to help deliver Ohio for Clinton, the Republican path to 270 electoral votes would be narrower than a needle’s eye. [SNIP]

Trump would be the most unpopular nominee ever, unable to even come close to Mitt Romney’s insufficient support among women, minorities and young people. In losing disastrously, Trump probably would create down-ballot carnage sufficient to end even Republican control of the House. Ticket splitting is becoming rare in polarized America: In 2012, only 5.7 percent of voters supported a presidential candidate and a congressional candidate of opposite parties.

I’m a Cruz supporter. Since the beginning of this campaign, I’ve thought he was the stongest and most genuinely conservative candidate on the ballot.

Unless Trump does something truly bizarre with his VP pick, I will be voting for him with only a few minor qualms.

These so - called ‘republicans’ like Mr. Will are being insanely hypocritical. During the last presidential election, they were screaming to us that we HAD to vote for the RINO establishment candidate, because anything else was a ‘vote for Obama’. Well, now the show is on the other foot, and they are going to have to vote for the clown with a bad haircut. They should shut up and freaking deal with it. Despite what I might think personally about Trump, the alternative of Hillary or, God forbid Sanders, is just too insane to even consider.

Do they WANT a ‘zombie apocalypse’? Really?

They may think they will be safe in their ivory towers, but they haven’t reall thought it through.

A convention’s sovereign duty is to choose a plausible nominee who has a reasonable chance to win, not to passively affirm the will of a mere plurality of voters recorded episodically in a protracted process.

Geo. Will is dismissing the actual voting and debating of the campaign process. Probably the best way we can find out about who a candidate really is and how they respond under pressure. No. Will and his elitist ilk think they know better than the masses.

Will is scum and an anti democratic monster.

You must admit the GOP has a lot of expertise at keeping people out of the White House. Bob Dole, John McCain, Mitt Romney ... the next guy they nominate ...

Mexican - Americans are more likely to own a small business than almost any other ethnic group. They are also as Catholic as any ethnic group.

But the most important thing is that every four years they will be a larger and larger percentage of the electorate. The Republican Party ignores them at its peril.

Since I didn't call Will a "moron", in my post to you, I suggest that YOU stop attempting to put words in my mouth, which is neither "civil" nor acceptable. OTOH, George Will IS a MORON and has done absolutely NOTHING whatsoever for Conservatives; not ever, except make them look like pompous asses, craven numbskulls, and/or supercilious prigs!

Not only am I older than you are, but actively involved in politics far longer. I grew up in a politically active and well connected family, so I've been attuned to all things political practically since birth. And FYI......I've never personally known anyone who wore an Elephant Hat, nor had elephants painted on their coffins.

You voted for Rubio in the primary ? RUBIO, the pro-amnesty idiot, who was mentored by Jebbie Bush and that light in the loafers, flip flopping parties Charlie Crist? WHY ????????????????????????

And you are a tawdry, offensive little man, calling all older women "blue haired ladies" !

Trump isn't "vulgar"; he's just blunt and plain spoken. He calls a spade a spade ( THANK GOD ! ) and gives others the courage to cut through the sadly now instituted PC crap.

LBJ was a "VULGARIAN", so was Harry Truman, Andrew Jackson, Clinton, and many others! Obviously you have less than NO idea just what constitutes "vulgar" !

Yes I said that you are a smoke blower ( that's a FACT ), but THAT was my being "polite"; you're worse than that!

True, but largely because the regulations that are strangling American businesses are not enforced on Mexicans. They can violate regulations all day long.

>But the most important thing is that every four years they will be a larger and larger percentage of the electorate. The Republican Party ignores them at its peril.

They will never, ever vote for the GOP unless we become the party of socialism. Which means we need to deport the illegals and their anchor babies. If we fail to do so the republic dies.

No argument there. The Republican Party has been awful the last 30 years. They don’t teach, they don’t fight.

In 1996 my father said “Boy Bob Dole is a bad candidate.” I said, well does that surprise you? He said no, not really so I asked him who he voted for in the primary. He said Dole.

I voted for Phil Gramm that year even though he had already dropped out by the time he reached Texas. He was the last Republican candidate who actually tried to explain Republican principals in his speeches.

I do have a Dole bumper sticker in my memorabilia collection. It’s “I’m a Dole Man” with dark glasses covering the O and E and a Blues brothers hat. Very ironic since it’s a great bumper sticker for one of the worst candidates ever.

Thank you for your long term commitment to the Republican party. I have done a great deal of volunteer work over the years as well for various organizations. We have also known many older ladies who have invested an incredible amount of effort into various causes. Much of the time their efforts are never truly recognized. So I thank you for giving them some of the recognition and friendship that they deserve.

George Will is someone who has a 50 years invested into the Republican Party. I have enjoyed listening to him for many years. This latest piece is the most atrocious, arrogant and ill-advised thing that has ever come from him. My guess is that he is so surrounded by like minded people that he does not have a good grasp of the actual situation. Unfortunately many of us find ourselves in this same type of situation.

One would think that Will would try not to insult the large number of people voting for Trump. It is no doubt going to be harmful to his reputation and following. But he may just be old enough to not really care.

Have something to say a little more substantive than, “he’s a moron,” or “he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” Let's see how George Will would do this.... "He has a policy mind made of the stuff that filled the Augean stables, but even Hercules couldn't find a cogent thought in his latest speech" Purple prose doesn't change the fact that Will is as vulgar as Trump, he's just trying dress it up for the rubes. As to the blue haired, elephant bedecked ladies, my mother was one, GOP through and through. What she did was honorable, at a time when the party wasn't selling Joe Sixpack out to the guys who fill the PACs with cash. As to the comparison with Robertson, it's flawed. Robertson used the system to inflate the influence of a minority within the party. Trump has the votes, but he must defeat the party who would deny the will of the voters.

In 2004, Bush lost the Hispanic vote to Kerry 53 - 44 %. He worked very hard for many years to get that 44 %. There’s a big difference between 44 % and 27 % especially when the group will get larger every year.

Pssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssst......Mexicans aren't the ONLY people with Spanish last names ( and most Mexicans who here are Mestizos at best! ), nor are they the ONLY ILLEGAL ALIENS coming into this nation. Neither are "HISPANICS" ( sic) a homogeneous group. The Cubans HATE the Puerto Ricans, the both hate the Mexicans and the others from south of the b order and don't forget about those from the Dominican Republic, who believe that they are better than all the others combined.

You quite obviously live in a BUBBLE, don't know about nor understand the demographics picture for the entire USA, state by state, and just ran smack dab into a huge stone wall ( ME ! ), who is trying to educate you, even though you don't want to know the facts!

Mexicans are NOT living in places like Maine and Minnesota, where HUGE groups of Somalis are now and reproducing like bunny rabbits; for example.

Huge numbers of ILLEGAL ALIEN Chinese are in various other states.

I can go on, but then you'd owe be lots of money for all of this tutoring. LOL

Just wait until Obama does his final PUSH to bring in all of those *cough* supposed Syrian "refugees", before he at long last leaves the White House!

Why so hostile?

My entire point of this thread is to try to tell the Trump supporters that they would have a better time unifying the party against Hillary if they slow down with the insults.

I voted for Rubio and worked really hard to get Cruz to beat Dewhurst in the primary working against the local party and congressman. You think I don’t know there are Hispanics that are not Mexican?

Really. Can’t you just be nicer? Other Republicans are not the enemy. We’re going to need all of them to beat Hillary. Stop with the insults already.

Lets take this apart.

Bush did the following to get lots of Hispanic votes: Tossed open the border. Spoke Spanish. Stopped enforcement of identity fraud for Mexicans. Forced banks to give them mortgages without proof of income (let to the housing boom/bust).

During this period I watched SoCal turn into Mexico.

>when the group will get larger every year.

The group gets larger every years because we haven't shut the border. Once here their birthrates quickly drop to American norms.

Finally, they're not immigrating, they're invading this country and replacing our culture with theirs. I don't give a damn if you want extra votes from these people. Either they go or the country goes.

You would think we could implement something as common-sense as:

When an illegal commits a crime, he pays his dues in prison, and is immediately deported afterwards.

It seems fairly noncontroversial to say, "You are a criminal. Go away."

Now, it's progressed far beyond that. I'm ready to snatch them out of elementary schools and load them on the first bus over the border.

Our politicians have let America get pissed off.

I’m with you on shutting the border and I actually think the way to get rd of illegal immigrants is to cut off their benefits. They can’t work or go to school or collect food stamps or WIC or medicaid and they’ll go someplace more hospitable to them.

The other side says you can’t bus out 11 million people (you notice they’ve been using the 11 million number for 10 years) but no one bused them in. They came on their own because it was in their interest to do it. They’ll go somewhere else when it’s in their interest to do it. We need to make it in their interest to do go somewhere else.

The demographic bomb has already gone off though. In 20 years the majority of voters in Texas will be Hispanic. If the party has no plan to attract those voters, Texas will inevitably turn blue.

Texas turns blue and we march towards European style socialism which may be inevitable anyway.

I'm NOT "hostile"; OTOH, I do NOT suffer fools lightly!

Being "nice" = rolling over and playing DEAD!

Back in the early '60s, whilst you were still in diapers and my mother was a BIG DEAL re women who worked to get GOPers elected, but NEVER wore a stupid hat that looked like an elephant ( she ONLY wore very beautiful, elegant hats ! ), we were watching the news together ( as was usual for us to do ) and I told here that it time for the GOP to finally take the damned white gloves off. Sadly, this horrified my beloved mother, but I was correct and still am!

I notice that you have completely IGNORED the salient points in ALL of my posts to you and instead, are metaphorically speaking, clutching your pearls and looking around for the fainting couch. You are part of the PROBLEM; not the answer!

Man up and also educate yourself about candidates, so that in the future you don't keep making the same stupid mistakes you keep making !

Yes, none of what I just told you is "nice", but it's factual! Rubio, Cruz, Jindal, and Nikki Haley are ALL NOT NBCers! Cruz is a fake and FRAUD, not to mention a liar, Rubio is pro-amnesty, a damned fool, easily wooed and turned, and both RINOS! Yet you PROUDLY have supported and voted for each in different elections/primaries.

And then there is your penchant for ethnic diversity voting ! After reading your posts, I'm surprised that you haven't been pushing for Trump to take an "HISPANIC" ( SIC) woman for his VEEP. How about a black Hispanic Jewish woman; that would cover everything except the LGBT vote. LOL
