Donald Trump’s damage to the Republican Party, although already extensive, has barely begun. Republican quislings will multiply, slinking into support of the most anti-conservative presidential aspirant in their party’s history. These collaborationists will render themselves ineligible to participate in the party’s reconstruction.

Ted Cruz’s announcement of his preferred running mate has enhanced the nomination process by giving voters pertinent information. They already know the only important thing about Trump’s choice: His running mate will be unqualified for high office because he or she will think Trump is qualified.

Hillary Clinton’s optimal running mate might be Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, a pro-labor populist whose selection would be balm for the bruised feelings of Bernie Sanders’s legions. Running mates rarely matter as electoral factors: In 2000, Al Gore got 43.2 percent of the North Carolina vote. In 2004, John Kerry, trying to improve upon Gore’s total there, ran with North Carolina Sen. John Edwards but received 43.6 percent. If, however, Brown were to help deliver Ohio for Clinton, the Republican path to 270 electoral votes would be narrower than a needle’s eye. [SNIP]

Trump would be the most unpopular nominee ever, unable to even come close to Mitt Romney’s insufficient support among women, minorities and young people. In losing disastrously, Trump probably would create down-ballot carnage sufficient to end even Republican control of the House. Ticket splitting is becoming rare in polarized America: In 2012, only 5.7 percent of voters supported a presidential candidate and a congressional candidate of opposite parties.

I have never read or heard anything so dumb. The idea that only Will and his kind can save the nation is the most arrogant, romantic, and poorly thought out notion I have ever from Will. Give this country to another marxist dim? We save the nation by giving it to criminal marxist? We will win the next election? Will, there will never be another election if Hilliary gets the office. George, here is a novel idea, get off your self righteous ass and work like hell to get our nominee elected. And if you can't do that then just be quiet and stop sabotaging us.

The fact is Obama and the Democrats built a house of cards in their first two years

Harry Reid , with the help of Republicans, made sure that the cards got stacked higher and higher making the stability of the house ever more precarious

Trust me, such women desperately want this nation to go back to the way it was back in their salad days, which is exactly where Trump also wants to take it, including lowering taxes!

Since they were young women when the "FREE SPEECH MOVEMENT" began, they are hardly "shocked" by, nor are they "clutching their pearls" over Trump's supposed "vulgarities"!

No, dear George, I don’t. The GOP failed to stop Obama and deserves to be punished.

If it had only done half the things it promised to do, Trump wouldn’t even be running today.

I loved the movie “Pride and Prejudice!”

George Will’s “commentary” reminded me of the character Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice, particularly when he was giving a very long, obnoxious sermon. I looked up the description of Mr. Collins on IMDb, and this is what they said:

William Collins is the cousin of Mr. Bennet.

A clergyman, he is the closest male relation to the Bennet family, and as such stands to inherit Longbourn upon Mr. Bennet’s death. MR. COLLINS IS A POMPOUS, NARROW-MINDED SYCOPHANT WHO IS EXCESSIVELY DEVOTED TO patronizing and flattering to his patroness, Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

George Will is Mr. Collins! His devotion is to his precious GOPe.

In the 80’s I was always a delegate to the state convention. I had a falling out over the party’s refusal to nominate Mexican-American candidates on the state slate.

Your pandering was pointless. Hispanics don't vote Democrat because Republicans aren't doing enough outreach or giving Mexicans enough quota spots, they vote Democrat because they're liberals. On every issue - abortion, welfare, spending, taxes - hispanic voters lean liberal by around 60%-40%. Therefore pandering to them with patronage, affirmative action or any other Democrat tactic won't work. It will only make the GOP more liberal as desperate hacks overlook the liberalism of their quota hires/appointments in order to fill as many slots as possible.

Remember when Colin Powell voted for Obama? It's like that.
