First U.S. Gas Shipment En Route to Europe
WSJ ^ | April 21, 2016 | Georgi Kantchev and Miriam Malek

A tanker from Louisiana loaded with U.S. natural gas is en route to Portugal, the first shipment in a trade relationship that could shake up the European market.

The 970-foot long Creole Spirit, carrying liquefied natural gas, is expected to arrive by the end of April, according to shipping data and people familiar with the matter.

In Europe, American gas will add to a swell in supply in a crowded market long dominated by Russia. Analysts predict that the arrival of U.S. gas could trigger a price war, leading to lower prices for consumers that could act as a shot in the arm for the struggling European economy.

Because propane and butane are LPG, whereas this shipment is LNG. The market for propane and butane in the US has been flat. If more vehicles are converted to propane, it will go up. If home heating oil prices go back up, the demand for propane will rise as home heating systems get converted.

The US has exported LNG to Japan and Taiwan beginning in 2014. This is the first to Europe. It is a big deal.

I was talking to a guy with a fleet of propane powered lawn mowers. (the big zero turn lawn service type - they had really big propane tanks strapped to the roll bar).

He claimed since propane was so cheap in the summer, it was less expensive to run than gasoline. Seemed like a dubious claim to me.

So why is this Atlantic shipment news?

This is the first LNG export.

Liquid Natural Gas is a mixture of, mainly, Methane and Ethane which is liquefied at a temperature of -262 °F

Methane's critical point is -82 C at 45 atm.

Butane and propane have critical temperatures much higher and are easily transported in liquid form

Propane kills weeds great using a 500,000 BTU torch...

The same lights the fire pit in seconds to an inferno....

This is an ineffectual token gesture that will do nothing ...we promised the EU that the pipeline would be built through Syria ,and then we went for the Ukraine ... Putin blocked us on both fronts ...the world is laughing at us, and deservedly so ...we need to mind our own business

Would Russia find exporting our US Nat Gas a provocative act to yet worsen the Russian economy?

Pretty much everything Obama does is an attack on Russia and the East European/Middle East/North African 21st Century status quo.

Color "Revolutions" to destroy stable trade agreements in favor of NWO insiders like Soros, "Arab Spring Revolutions" to destroy stable legal Secular Arab governments cooperating with US policy, arming and supporting Al Queda and ISIS Muslim terrorist radicals against those same legal governments that Russia has legal agreements or alliances with.

It's hard not to see a pattern, and ALL wars are economic in nature.

Butane & Propane does not equal LNG.

Butane & Propane are more refined and more expensive.

LNG is cheaper and still burns clean. Is more difficult to liquefy.

Seeing that natural gas contains approximately 1,030 BTU per cubic foot and propane contains 2,490 BTU per cubic foot, we can easily derive each fuel's cost per BTU and compare their differences in price for more realistic volumes.

So propane has roughly 2.5 times the BTU's per cu. ft. of gas. But it cost more per cu. ft. You will have to do the math on price comparison.

I think that once this LNG export business matures we will be paying much more to heat our houses. My highest gas bill this past winter was 72 bucks but I have seen it as high as 210 back when NG was 12 or 15/1000.

"We need to stop all energy exports. This is stupid. We send the raw materials and they send us fished goods. That is text book mercantilism. We are being colonized people.

I am sure that the "raw materials" fraction of natural gas (ethane, propane and butane) have been removed, and what is being exported is methane, which is of little use as a raw material. Your comment is seriously misguided an inaccurate.

Why are Propane BTUs more expensive? How do they compare to Diesel BTUs

Propane is much more refined, hence it costs more. (if you believe everything “they” tell you.

The only way to tell if calculate price per BTU for both fuels.

It was loaded at the Cheniere Energy facility, they are a receiver of natural gas from several different areas of the US. We sell our gas to DCP who owns the pipeline that takes gas to the recievers/refiners on the gulf coast.

NG is the one energy source we have in abundance, more than enough to export and still have a reserve.
