Norwegian F16 jet shoots up control tower, officers inside

The Norwegian Air Force has been left feeling awkward after one of its F-16 jets on a drill mistakenly opened fire on a control tower with three officers who were inside at the time of the mock attack. An investigation has been started into the grave error, which took place on Tarva, off Norway’s west coast, AFP was told by military spokesman Captain Brynjar Stordal. Astonishingly, no one was injured in the incident.

On April 12-13, two F-16s were performing a mock attack on an enemy station on the uninhabited island, when one of them mistakenly opened fire on the control tower with its M61 Vulcan cannon, capable of making Swiss cheese out of metal and concrete at 100 rounds per second.

I did a lot of work with the Norwegian military and they are a goofy bunch (in a good way). They like to joke and enjoy some pretty extreme and/or tastteless ones. I can imagine some pilot thinking it would be a real hoot to buzz the tower and open fire thinking his weapons were not loaded. Ooops!

My unit, the 268th Attack Helicopter BN made national news when we toasted a sheep herder's Silverside trailer at Yakima during annual gunnery in 1986 or '87.

The gunner, a CW2 said in an interview "We were expecting a CONNEX container but when we got secondaries (explosions from the propane tank) we knew we had a major Aww shit on our hands"
